Job Openings Plunged By One-Quarter Last Year
Source: AP

1:56 pm EST February 9, 2010

WASHINGTON -- Finding a job got much tougher last year, as the number of available openings fell by nearly one quarter.

At the same time, the unemployed population soared by more than one-third, leaving more laid-off workers competing for fewer jobs.

All told, there were 6.1 unemployed workers in December, on average, for every available position, according to Labor Department data released Tuesday.

That's a sharp increase from 3.4 jobless workers per opening in December of 2008, and much worse than the 1.7 unemployed people per opening in December 2007, when the recession began.

2. My company is hiring like crazy, so are many others in my area
I don't know about you but we are having issues finding people to fill our slots at my job.

Granted, they're all I.T. jobs which require database and programming skills but we're sure are hiring. We've also hired people that are less qualified, all temp to hire, but so far we've all converted the ones who reached the end of their contract.

A friend of mine is reporting issues at his own job filling a lot of various positions, a lot of customer representative jobs.

One of the offices in our office was vacant and that has been filled, the parking lot is now very full and better come early to get a good spot. There is a company that also moved into a vacant building. Before that the business was a tiling business. Now they assembled go karts and electric vehicles a plenty, trucks keep coming in and guys keep putting them together.

Granted, they're all Made In China, that's the sad part, and many industrial jobs are NOT coming back.

A good friend lost her job at a big bank selling loans, now she was just hiring back and it seems people are financing home loans again.

Now, that's in the Phoenix area.

Not one day that I don't spend time hoping for this bad economy to turn around. We may see it happening faster than we thought.
