Honduras says it will follow Spain's lead, withdraw troops from Iraq in June; El Salvador to stay put

Honduras plans to follow Spain's lead and withdraw 370 troops from a Spanish-led humanitarian and peacekeeping brigade in June, Defense Secretary Federico Breve said Tuesday.

The decision marked an about-face from the day before, when President Ricardo Maduro said he would not pull his soldiers from Iraq.

Tuesday's announcement "coincides with the decision of the prime minister-elect of the Spanish government," Breve said.

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the socialist candidate who won Spain's elections Sunday, has called the Iraq invasion an error, and said he would recall Spanish troops from Iraq by June 30 unless the United Nations assumes control of multinational military operations there.

1. I wonder how the terrorists are celebrating this news
I bet they are in full bomb production mode for the next country to be taken over by fear.

13. Since the "terrorists" wanted a world-wide jihad, I imagine they are,...
,...getting pretty PO'd that those who would engage in a global conflict are no longer gaining support. The extremists' hope for an armageddon is melting away. Personally, I am feeling better about the world,...and safer, too!! :D

3. Pfffft.

If simply bombing a country made its citizens overthrow the party in power, than why did the Repukes sweep the midterms after 9/11?

Chew on that one for awhile PoundSi02.

7. When do you intend to volunteer for the Army so that you can...
...put your money where your mouth is?

Seriously, if you believe all of the nonsense you've been posting to DU over the last few days, you need to find a role in the Fuhrer's "War Agin' Terrar". You might find more people agree with your professed philosophy.

9. Had we not invaded Iraq illegally...
...we wouldn't be having this discussion. The tons on Iraqi NBC waepons would not be under the control of people we don't know. We would knwo where they were at.

Had G.W. Bush not been elected President the world would be safer and saner than it is now.

16. What did Iraq have to do with terror, again?
Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 01:03 PM by gsh999
Other nations are discovering the truth that Iraq had nothing to do with terror. Now that the US-espoused reasons for the Iraq war have been exposed as lies, expect more nations to pull out of our ostensible coalition. Not out of fear but out of rational thinking. Why don't you try that sometime?

the US has abandoned it for Bush's Folley in Iraq.

11. If Canada has any troops in Iraq, it's a secret to most Canadians
However, we have contributed substantial forces to the Afghanistan NATO force (I believe it is NATO, rather than U.N.).

14. I think there was one or two Canuks "stuck" in Iraq at the time
.
.
.

The USA invaded.

There was a bit of a stink about it I seem to remember, but they didn't stay there.

And the "list" is not even close to accurate.

Heck, if a country has a dozen people in there helping on a food-line or something, The USA counts them as one of the "willing"

AND

The so-called willing?

well, most of them were threatened with loss of aid, sanctions or something to get them there in the first place. the following is a little bit out of date, but the message is clear - -

From a Flyer made 3/19/03

Washington says that in the war on Iraq they lead a coalition of 45 nations.

This is a transparent sham:

• 15 of the 45 are too ashamed to be named.
• 24 of the rest are sending NO troops. This includes Spain!
• 4 are sending token numbers (less than 300 at most).

That leaves Australia (2,000 troops), the UK (45,000) and the US (315,000).

It’s not a coalition, it’s a gang.

http://www.speakingformyself.net/wyomingdissent/30flyer2.pdf

Read the whole flyer if you want, it's only one page, but VERY enlightening. Wonder if they have an updated one

- hmmm

15. Suppose each country started dropping support one by one...
where would that leave Chimp & Co.? Would they have to let the UN take over? Would they have to admit the whole thing is a complete failure?

And if they did have to admit it, would everything come crumbling down for the Bush administration?
