Bush Marks First Anniversary of Iraq War (speech 11 AM Eastern)

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&ncid=703&e=1&u=/ap/20040319/ap_on_el_pr/bush

WASHINGTON - One year after ordering the first military strikes against Iraq (news - web sites), President Bush (news - web sites) marks the anniversary with a fresh defense of his actions for a voting public that remains split over his decision and international allies who are growing weary of continued postwar violence in that country.

The president was offering a favorable progress report and issuing a call for support in a "time of testing."

In a gesture of unity despite Spain's threatened defection from Bush's "coalition of the willing," dozens of ambassadors from countries closely aligned with the United States were attending Bush's speech.

Bush's effort was dealt another blow Thursday when Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski (in DC today), another key U.S. ally, said his country was "misled" about whether Saddam's regime had weapons of mass destruction and said he may withdraw his country's 2,400 troops early from Iraq.

The National Annenberg Election Survey this month found Americans divided on whether they approve of the way Bush is handling Iraq, with 47 percent saying "yes" and 49 percent saying "no." The survey also found they were split on whether the Iraq situation merited going to war.

As of Thursday, 568 U.S. service members had died in Iraq since military operations began on March, 19, 2003, with most of those killed during combat. More than three-fourths of the dead, or 430, were killed after May 1, when Bush flew to the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln and declared the end of major combat operations in Iraq.

Watch it here.

2. Why?
Why is the United States celebrating the "shock and Awe" deaths of so many people? I think this is totally UN-American.to make the anniversary of our invading a country....under the total LIES of this * administration......

Wonder id the Iraqi boy with no arms or legs is celebrating with his fake limbs..the soldiers who are maimed for life.the families of the dead?

This is sick.just plain sick!!!!

3. Ever forward never show weakness or doubt
I would suspect that any President in this situation (have there been any?) would do the same especially in an election year. This crowd plays everything like it is a win--sell sell sell that "stock".

34. It is very sick--we are on the path of war, war, as a great undertaking
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 07:31 PM by Marianne
under a great "war president" and it is totally sickening to me.

ten thousand people are a lot of people to kill in that short period of time and apparently it was done indiscriminately like a bull in a china shop knocking off Steuben glass figurines off the shelves. Indeed, we are even told it was "worth it"

I grieve for those lives every day as well as for our troops who were needlessly sent on this mission to get the oil for Bush's buddies. But they are, after all, fighting troops and casualties are expected there--although I do not sacntion using them as pawns, but-these Iraqi people were children, babies, pregnant women, old men and just plain ordinary people who did not have a choice as to where they would be born . They were killed by our bombs, in their homes and in their bed as they slept.

And it was all done by lies. Lies told in order to kill these innocent people.

No one seems to care about this slaughter. It is seldom mentioned.

CNN's report on this had another "flight suit" pic of Bush holding a child, apparently taken yesterday at his visit to the 101st Airborne:

29. Hahaha! Did you noticed that, too?
He named them, endlessly, over and over again, as if he was trying to make a point that although Spain (and others) were probably withdrawing their troops, OTHER countries still supported this war. What an asshole!

Duh! Mr Bush: things have changed. YOU LIED, okay? DUH! Why do you think that everyone is changing their minds, and withdrawing troops, unless the UN sanctions the action?

All of the nations that are pulling out, or contemplating pulling out are saying, in effect: George W. Bush: YOU ARE A LIAR!

What part of that message does he not get?

22. Where are the critical voices against this war on TV????
Besides political types, there are no critical voices to be heard at all about Iraq. Yet ex-general after ex-general talk ad naseum about how great things are going and what we have learned in iraq so the next time we decide to crush another country we can do it better.

Thousands killed and for what?

A very good point. Aside from Kerry stating that this was done with poor planning and that they lied into it ( he doesn't actually say THAT) there is none.

By SCOTT LINDLAW, Associated Press Writer

The audience listened in silence to his remarks but applauded at the end.

"There can be no separate peace with the terrorist enemy," Bush said. "Any sign of weakness or retreat simply validates terrorist violence and invites more violence for all nations."

"There is no neutral ground _ no neutral ground _ in the fight between civilization and terror, because there is no neutral ground between good and evil, freedom and slavery, and life and death," Bush said. "The war on terror is not a figure of speech," he said. "It is an inescapable calling of our generation."

"Many coalition countries have sacrificed in both Iraq and Afghanistan," he said. "Among the fallen soldiers and civilians are sons and daughters of Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, the United Kingdom and the United States."

Bush's speech was given added impetus by rising criticism from Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. On Wednesday, Kerry accused Bush of stubbornly holding to policies that he said have driven away potential allies at the cost of lives and money, "with no end in sight."

33. Oh for gawds sake--what is he crying about the big coward sissy
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 07:15 PM by Marianne
reminds me of the time tears came to his eyes when he hung an oil painting of himself in the White House.

He should be down on his knees, with tears in his eyes, begging the forgiveness of the American people for first of all stealing an election from them and for lying to them about attacking Iraq. He is a goddam liar and should be crying his eyes out in regret over the fact that 570 or so of our troops are dead becasue of his lies and ten thousand innocent civilians. Instead we get bragging about his greatness.

Headlines on Yahoo "Bush Hails Iraq War as Boost for Mideast Stability"

The liar--who the hell does he think he is analyzing the ME stability.

All day , I mean ALL DAY, there has been nothing but
Bush lauding Iraq, Bush tells the world to join his war on terror, Bush Iraq-- all day --all goddamm day on the Yahoo headlines. Without end and without a break.

Something better be done about this quick. Where is everybody? This propaganda cannot stand without someone saying he is lying and slathering the cake with sugar coated icing.
