Morals week counters Gay Pride week on NC campus
Edited on Mon Mar-22-04 03:29 PM by JoFerret
More of those fun loving college republicans:

<<AgapePress) - Conservative students at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro are countering "Gay Pride Week" on campus with a "Morals Week."

University officials initially rejected a request by the College Republicans (CR) to hold a Morals Week, but after Townhall.com columnist Mike Adams and a couple of politicians criticized the censorship, the school had a change of heart. Morals Week begins today (Monday) and coincides with Gay Pride Week. Events include an "American Pride Day," "Abstinence Day," and "Right to Life Day.">>

6. Hurting others?
I did not read about any violence in that article...

What am I missing?

Let the Republicans have their shot- its free speech- if they advocate violence, then that is another matter...

8. Yes, all they want to do is hurt others
Their 'morals' week is going to be full of 'God hates Gays' messages, as well as condemnation and vitriol against anyone who opposes their point of view. They hijack the Bible and Christianity and twist it around, picking and choosing Bible verses to support their nosy, bigoted, racist, cruel positions. You can hurt others without being physically violent.

10. They should not be censored, but debated
...I am for free-speech, but the phrase "Gods Hates Fags" has no place at a school. I doubt they will take that approach, but who knows.

I say their views should be WELCOME and OPENLY debated.

The best way to get these guys is to DEBATE them, not get hysterical & censor them...

27. No, I am right. Censorship is wrong and hysterical...
I WELCOME any Rightwinger to put his ideas next to mine- especially if they are spouting far out stuff.

You dont defeat Rightwing speech with censorship, you defeat it with MORE SPEECH.

As I said- inflamatory statments like the one mentioned has no place in any school- but open debate on an issue that is not going away is the right thing...

last year we had this big bruhaha in Chapel Hill when the RW's protested the freshman reading assignment "Approaching the Koran (sic)" .... and I thought it would be so great when Jesse Helms finally retired or died.

4. It's good to see the students "Freedom of Speech" upheld.
Disagree with their message, but I agree with their being allowed to voice it. We just have to make sure we do a much better job getting our message out is all.

15. Right- the best way to fight these guys is to remain intellectually honest
...it would not suprise me if there are conservatives at this university who are racist- But many are not, at least they are not our father's racists...

But why dont we wait until they say somthing racist before we discredit ourselves..

The facts alone are enough...

I say the Liberals at this college should challenge these guys to a series of open debates and expose them for what ever they are...

11. They are promoting the Christian way
if their belief is that Christ was an insufferably anal bigot.

The article, from the "Christian News Service" says:"Conservative students are not as welcomed here on campus," Billingsley laments. "We believe that shut out any kind of activities that conservative students have, and that goes along with any kind of Christian organization as well. We're really looking forward to changing that."

The CR spokesman points out that the school's frequent attempts to censor conservative students is not only against the law, but also demonstrates an obvious bias.

"We were denied funding because we wanted to have a Morals Week -- and because we were called 'Republicans.' Well, most of our College Republicans are devout Christians as well, so that was a direct slap in the face because we were denied funding," he says. "Yet our colleagues in the gay community have received tons of funding -- and we just don't understand why that is."
(snip) I've lived around well-balanced Christians all my life who WOULDN'T DREAM of getting in there and trying to grab any and every thing they imagine "others" are getting. This is a lesson learned badly.

People who grasp the teachings of Christ would NEVER kick and bite like these bastards, and would try to pay attention to the life which "God" gives them every day.

14. Republican "morals" include:
- Forcing women to bear children against their will, even in cases of rape and incest

- Treating gay and lesbian citizens like garbage

- Tacitly endorsing racism by embracing the Confederate flag and Bob Jones

- Brainwashing children with hogwash (e.g. "creation science")

- Preaching that non-believers will be tortured in Hell for eternity

- Trashing the environment

- Cutting health benefits for children and the poor

16. You're not even close on the first line
When Danny Q was running for vice-president, he went to a college where he was asked by a young woman what she should do if she got pregnant as a result of being raped by her father. Quayle told her she should deliver the baby.

There are wingers out there who'd like abortion to be illegal even in the event that the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother.

I seem to remember a woman in a coma who was pregnant. Her family was told that the only way to save the woman (or was it "the only way to bring her out of the coma"--I left my brain in the car this morning, folks, sorry) was to abort the baby, and some pro-lifers who weren't related to her went to court to try to stop the abortion.

Who was that Republican congressman who wanted the "rape or incest" exception taken out of an anti-abortion measure because women couldn't get pregnant from rape?

To far too many Republicans, the woman is still chattel who should remain barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen. (One is far too many.)

What a tragic waste of years that can be very merry and immoral indeed!

Have a pleasant "morals week," young scarecrows!

20. actually I like for the the repugs to fall back on these issues. it will
help show the differences between repugs and dems. repugs have been painting themselves as mod's and pushing dems further left, is how they have been able to pull so many of the independents.

22. It should be called "Morals WEAK" because
the majority who claim to have good morals are a bunch of hypocrites who like to hide their own immorality by attacking others on the issue.

23. As a college student...
That's just lame. At my school, "sponsored" weeks are pointless. At OkSoberfest I went to all the activites with some friends drunk as a hell with a 40 oz. of King Cobra. If I knew abstinence day was coming I'd spend all day in bed with my girlfriend, and so would most of my friends. Attempts like these don't convince anyone...they just make the organizers feel self-righteous...

It never works. These things always become jokes and backfire.
