BREAKING: Federal Flow Rate Technical Team Established To Determine Extent of BP Oil Spill
Source: Huffington Post

Admiral Thad Allen, the National Incident Commander for the Deepwater Horizon Response team, has today established the Flow Rate Technical Team, a multi-agency federal effort to determine oil flow rates from the BP spill at multiple time periods following the explosion, fire, and subsequent loss of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig.

Led by the U.S. Coast Guard, Minerals Management Service (MMS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), along with technical representatives from the Department of Energy (DOE) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the team will work on a multi-agency level in order to compute the total outflow of the BP oil spill, a critical question that still has not been answered by BP.

Lieutenant Commander J.R. Hoeft, the Online Communications Coordinator at the Deepwater Horizon Response Joint Information Center, who provided EnergyBoom.com with the news about the launch of the Flow Rate Technical Team, told me that:

“The team will work to obtain data that is available on the reservoir, wellbore, blowout preventer, subsea flowing pressures, leak points, discharge plumes and surface discharge observations. With this information, the team will identify and run state-of-the-art models to calculate flow rates and compare results.”

9. My thoughts exactly.
Seriously. WTF. I know people don't like the Katrina comparisons, but shit. A month to establish a team to begin to decide how to assess the damage is both beyond belief and eerily familiar. And I believe even this wouldn't have happened if there hadn't been the damaging (to BP and the administration) recent interview repudiating BP's estimates.

(But hey, the administration did take care of the important stuff immediately. They set up a website. :eyes: )

which anyone with a few brain cells can look at and quickly realize that the 5000 bpd estimate is absurd.

15. Maybe it is more complicated than you might think.
In fact, I will state it a little more clearly. It is more complicated than you seem to think.

You have to find the right experts with the right amount of time. You don't want to hire just people from the industry. Then again, you may not want just academics. The numbers tha to be right. You don't want to have to do this over because whatever you calculate might be used against you in court.

The government probably does not keep all of the kinds of experts it needs for this on its staff.

4. So now we are spending taxpayer dollars to find out what BP already knows

and this crack team will get back to us with their answers in about lets say about eight months or so.

All of this just because we are allowing BP to keep quiet.
