(Quebec/Ottawa) Fight against forest fires continues

MONTREAL — The impact of forest fires raging in Quebec will continue to leave their mark today far from the remote infernos.

The acrid smoke from the fires has drifted across central Canada and deep into the United States as far south as Cape Cod.

Of the nearly 50 forest fires burning in Quebec, at least seven remain out of control.

More than 1,300 firefighters are battling the blazes -- including about 300 from New England, New Brunswick and Western Canada.

2. Is it really dry there? We are so wet here in the northwest that someone couldn't
start a fire if they tried. So many weather extremes!

3. I was in Burlington, VT over the long weekend and we could
smell it like someone was having a bonfire next door. Also, even though you could tell it was a sunny day, it was so hazy it had to have been the smoke drifting south. It was really thick.

4. The wind was strong enough to send the smoke south all the way to
Nantucket off Massachusetts, believe it or not.

Mount Washington Observatory in NH has video to share.

Check with Boston local news for yesterday to see reports of the smoke going that far and further south.

5. That's amazing! And very scary - the smoke seemed so local.
We aren't as used to this as those in more wildfire prone areas. The northeast's weather woes always seem to be somewhat manageable, but this worries me. It seems like no place on the planet has gone unaffected by nature's wrath.

6. Yesterday, I was trying to figure out where the smoke...
I live in NH and yesterday the smoke was all over the place. I thought there was a fire in the neighborhood until I heard about the Quebec fires. I'm pretty sure that's the first time that's happened here. (So. NH)
