inundated by oil while the concert is going on.

I wonder how his sister's Gulf Shores restaurant (Lulu's) is doing.
He probably has a good idea of the economic effects from her.

33. Yeah, since he grew up there and has done a ton of charity for the area.
He even wrote a song for a bar after Hurricane Hugo (I think it was Hugo). He's always doing public service and charity work for the region. Decent bloke. Wish there were more like him.

6. Whoopee!
Millionaire pop musician throws free concert to pimp his new millionaire's hotel. I feel all better now and so does the GoM!

At this point of the catastrophe, I say fuck your new hotel. How about raising some money to clean up the fucking mess, stop global warming, save endangered GoM species of wildlife or help somebody besides your investors and your own millionaire-cheeseburger-in-paradise-ass!?

34. A Sargent Shulz post.
You know nothing.

"How about raising some money to clean up the fucking mess, stop global warming, save endangered GoM species of wildlife or help somebody besides your investors and your own millionaire-cheeseburger-in-paradise-ass!?"

He does all of that on a routine basis, maybe doing more of that these days than promoting his own interests. He's been an environmental activist for decades, fighting global warming before you knew what it was, and has done a ton of work fighting for endangered species--his efforts to save the manatee are legendary.

ANd since he grew up near Gulf Shores, it's not much of a surprise that he's done a lot of charity work in the area, and it's also not a surprise he's invested in the area himself. If you see the latter as the excuse for the former, you know even less than nothing.

Seriously, before you insult decent people so you can feel all superior and shit, you should maybe learn a thing or two about them. He's been on our side probably longer than you have--not that I think you are now, with that kind of bullshit post.

44. I'l be dipped in shit.
http://www.savethemanatee.org/

Had no idea. Apologies and thanks for the tip. That is why I hang at DU; to get informed.

Pissy is not my normal tone but this disaster is getting to me and his music makes me wretch and I see this free concert as opportunistic to promoting his bad investment and analogous to the band playing on the deck while the Titanic sinks.

If it makes folks happy, play on. Hope it helps...doubt it will.

Good luck.

"Sailing to the Caribbean Jimmy might well be

Pictures up in Rollin' Stone for all the world to see

The rich keep getting richer, the poor they just stay poor

Jimmy buffet doesn't' live in Key West anymore"

9. It will take a lot of concerts to make up for beaches, water, and fish.
I would have a hard time getting into a Jimmy Buffet concert mood with reminders of the spill so close at hand.

12. I swear, Jesus Christ himself could walk across that oily gulf right onto the beach
raise the dead turtles and pelicans, Superman could fly backwards and take us to before the spill, Mother Theresa could feed every child whose parents' jobs were lost, Ghandi could mediate meetings between the oil companies, the GOP and the White House, a choir of angels could sing and endless orgasms could flow across the land and some of you guys would only take notice in order to bitch about ulterior motives and the color of the freakin' pony.

I'm sick of it. And no, I haven't drunk anybody's goddamned Kool-aid, but I do recognize sheer obstructionism when I see it, and folks, it's malignant. It's time for me to look for another place to hang. I think I'll go spend the time I typically spend on DU trying to actually do something, in my own imperfect, somewhat self-serving, yet potentially helpful way.

Catch you on the flip side.

25. Yeah, the cynicism is kinda deep.
I think a free concert is a fine idea, and the benefits will help some struggling businessmen, and their employees, get through a tough time.

Jimmy Buffet's not my exact cup of tea, but some folks like him. I'm glad he's willing to help.

They played Margarita-vile all day long and I almost went insane. Hey, I got an idea, instead of water boarding....nah that would be way to sadistic.

Hope they can make some money and it gets to where it should though.

Now THERE is a musical ambassador for the Gulf region. He will probably be playing like fourth billing at this show, but that man is a national treasure.
