Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah may follow Arizona's lead on immigration law
Source: The Washington Post

Attention is focused on Arizona and the federal government's challenge to the state's strict new immigration law, but three other states could adopt similar legislation next year.

Lawmakers in Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah, which have already taken steps against illegal immigration, say that Arizona-style measures have a realistic chance of passing when their legislatures reconvene in 2011.

The Obama administration sued Arizona in federal court Tuesday, charging that the state law usurps federal authority, would hamper immigration enforcement and would lead to police harassment of those who have no proof of lawful status. The government asked that a federal judge stop the law from taking effect July 29.

Legislators in at least 17 other states introduced bills this year similar to the Arizona law, which allows officers to question anyone they suspect of being in the country illegally. But most of those measures are not considered likely to be adopted or signed by governors.

The political climate in Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah, however, improves the chances that state legislatures there could follow Arizona's lead in 2011.

In 2007, Oklahoma led the way on such laws by adopting legislation that makes it a felony to knowingly transport or shelter an illegal immigrant. It also blocked illegal immigrants from obtaining driver's licenses and in-state tuition.

BTW, the author's name? Michael W. Savage! (I'm sure no relation exists between this innocent journalist and the rabid right-wing radio host) But I'm sure that the radio host Savage is drooling after reading this news, then reads the byline and wishes he could've reported it. As for the event it sucks, and get ready to boycott those states too. (Haven't Oklahoma and Utah proposed nutty anti-abortion laws too?)

1. We have to block the employers -- the magnets for illegals . . .
In Arizona a few years ago -- according to Hartmann -- they ruled that every

employer had to check E-Security -- think that was it -- an instant confirmation

of Social Security # and name of individual --

The right wing protested that this kind of thing couldn't come from a state and had

to be Federal -- and overturned it --

Now -- why isn't the Federal government doing this? Right now?

I think there are already an estimated 11 million or more new illegals -- that's aside

from those that Reagan granted Amnesty to -- and there is NO WAY we can ship all of

them back -- impossible.

But what Arizona is doing is something else again -- trying to turn every citizen into

a suspect -- especially if you look at all Hispanic!

2. Apparently AZ police already enjoy the sport of
screwing with brown people. Friends of mine (husband, wife, and 2 kids) went to AZ over the 4th weekend to visit family. They were stopped by a Maricopia deputy who handcuffed the husband who doesn't speak English too well and yelled orders at him in English, then got rough with him when he didn't know what the officer was telling him to do. Then the officer threatened to arrest the kids who translate for their dad, threatened to arrest the wife (who is pretty English fluent) when she tried to give the officer her husband's green card and driver's license. Ultimately wrote the husband a ticket and explained the ticket to him in Spanish...apparently the officer speaks fluent Spanish..What a shithole AZ has become. This family is, IMO, among the best people I know. The entire family donates hundreds of hours per year for 'community service'...just helping make the community better and in the process instilling great ethics in their children...they are beautiful people and they deserve better than the treatment they received in AZ. They said they will never go back, their family will have to come visit them or they will meet their family out of state...makes me sick..

6. OK, We Expect Such Craziness from Way Out West. . .
But South Carolina has to buckle up. After a series of dreadful embarrassments from the state. . . "You Lie!", "Argentina, Here I come!", and just about anything Lindsay says. . .

. . . it's time for the weird and wacky ways of South Carolina to be reigned in. After all, the state has some history and neighbors the civilized east coast states.

Can we reign in the wacky KKK antics, please?
