PHOENIX (AP) -- A new poll shows Arizona Sen. John McCain widening his lead over his Republican challenger ahead of next month's GOP primary.

The Rocky Mountain Poll released Wednesday shows McCain leading former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth 64 percent to 19 percent. Political newcomer Jim Deakin had 5 percent.

McCain's margin has widened from a 54 percent to 28 percent lead he held over Hayworth in the same poll in April.

5. Why???

I have my disagreements with McCain and I seriously hope he loses the general election, but Heyworth is a NUTCASE. McCain is by far the lesser of two evils.

6. True he's a nutcase but
There are a few different schools of thought as to why McCain should lose

1. the teabaggers are helping to tear apart the GOP and alienate them from voters with more sanity so let's put a few in to wreak havoc
2. as a new senator he won't have the seniority and thus the power that McCain does
3. McCain is a bitter piece of shit that needs to be thrown off the government doles that he's lived on all of his life.

8. And
4. JD Hayworth would be easier to defeat in Nov
5. No way will McCain just willingly give up his seat. I'm certain he would run as an Independent and that would split the repub vote.

7. Screw McCain & the Republican Party.
These are politicians and organizations that should become irrelevant. It's bad enough to think the Democrats might one day reform into a real party of the people, but to expect that anything good will ever come of the Republicans just because the slightly less rabid one represents them is beyond reason.

3. As much as I detest JD Hayworth
I was kind of hoping he would beat McCain, because I'm fairly certain McCain would pull a Lieberman and run as an Independent.

4. I believe you are right but...
This also shows the tea party movement is losing steam.

9. Mixed feelings about this
JD Hayworthless is a loon. John McCain is a loon. I thought this would be much closer with each of them splitting the loon vote fairly equally.

Though Sarah did campaign for McCain and he looked damned uncomfortable standing behind her listening to her babble.

I wish it were a closer race. It might be more interesting to watch if it were.

10. We shouldn't be cheerleading either of these.
It's problematic to wish for the GOP to become an openly fascist party, as Hayworth would have it. McCain is no prize either. I don't see a strategic or tactical reason to wish for the victory or defeat of either.

13. I hope McCain loses, he is not trust worthy and receives a pass
from the press more often than not. Hayworth is nuts, and the press will love to hate his crazy crap. This would play
out much better for Democrats in the end.

14. As an Arizonan, I am heartened by this. J.D. Hayworth(less) used
to be my Representative, but he in no way represented me. He is a dangerous lunatic. If he won the primary, he would win the general. I DO NOT WANT J.D. to be my senator. Yes, McCain is terrible. But he's way better than my other senator, vile Kyle. J.D. would make Kyle look like Mother Theresa.

I NEVER want J.D. representing me again!!!!

15. I think even our FRiends have begun to realize what a dud Hayworth is...
...or maybe Arizona Republicans believe JD is a buffoon.

...One wouldn't think so, but the fact that JD should have name recognition in Az and can't generate any real enthusiasm I think says more about Hayworth than it does McCain.

...Mr. Crew Cut can’t get fundraising. Maybe he should go get a tax free government loan or something he was harping about

...I agree. Hayworth comes across as a self-promoting nut. I’m not from Arizona but I have to admit that if I were, I’d probably vote for McCain.
