Apple net profit up 78 percent

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Apple said Tuesday that its quarterly net profit rose 78 percent and revenue hit a new record on strong sales of Macintosh computers, iPhones and the new iPad. The Cupertino, California-based company posted a net profit of 3.25 billion dollars in its fiscal third quarter, which ended on June 26, compared to 1.82 billion dollars a year ago.

Apple said revenue rose to a record 15.7 billion dollars from 9.73 billion dollars a year ago. Apple said it sold 3.47 million Macintosh computers during the quarter, a new quarterly record and a 33-percent increase over a year ago.

Apple said it sold 8.4 million iPhones in the quarter, up 61 percent over a year ago, and 9.41 million iPods, down eight percent from a year ago. Apple said it sold 3.27 million iPads during the quarter. Apple only began selling the tablet computer in April.

In their Quarterly Conference Call, Tim Cook (Apple's COO) says that they can't make iPhone 4s and iPads fast enough to meet demand.

iPads outsold Macs last quarter and it was the best quarter for Mac sales ever, so that must have been a LOT of iPads. Ah, 3.27 million.

3. My iPhone 4 works great.
Edited on Tue Jul-20-10 04:14 PM by onehandle
There are no problems with regular use.

Since this whole thing started, bunches of videos of other phones losing signal when you grip them have been posted.

Also there is a web site that is posting manuals of other phones with illustrations that show you how not to hold the phone certain ways to prevent signal loss.

8. I'm curious as to whether you have an iphone?
The reason I ask it that it seems like most of those defending the iPhone on DU have them and most of those who are criticizing them don't.

For the record, I don't have an iPhone or an iPad, but I do have an iPod.

12. Sorry, Oregone, but I love my iPhone 4 as well.
In every way, it is superior to Mr. Tesha's iiPhone 3G (even in
reception in most circumstances) and the difference in speed
is just incredible.

He'll be upgrading the minute the white iPhones roll out.

19. Any phone that requires me to hold it a certain way to keep signal should be recalled.
Their answer? Just change the way you hold it.

Just like the iPad that (as far as I know) still has terrible WiFi with many networks. Their answer to that one? Get a different access point.

Or the iMac line in 2007 that had faulty nVidia cards in them that caused them to overheat and fail without even a heavy load on the card. Our office had one of those... it ran Vista and apparently the 3D involved in Aero (which is almost nothing) was enough to trigger it. Apple to this day denies that there was even an issue, even though there are hundreds of reports of problems.

Or OS X Server, which is bundled with Podcast Producer (a distributed video conversion and video hosting software) that is a great piece of software, but doesn't work at all with Internet Explorer. They still claim in their white papers that it has full compatibility with Active Directory as well as Internet Explorer. I've spent probably a good 200 hours customizing it and fixing their broken code and making it work with something OTHER than QuickTime at the college I work at... most of which apple has little to no documentation for. It was a blast shoehorning Handbrake and an alternate flash video player into Podcast Producer so video conversions would work with MP4 files that were created with something other than QuickTime and the end-user didn't have to have QuickTime installed to view the resulting output.

Granted, they usually fix the problems a year or two later, but it's amazing how many people will put up with some very significant Apple issues but will rag on XP for not being secure enough, and then rag on Vista for being TOO secure with the UAC prompts, or complain that it ran too slowly on the PC that they bought 4 years earlier.

I have my issues with both companies, but at least when I'm developing software on Windows I have access to documentation on how things work and the software (for the most part) works with more than just one format.

13. As of today, Apple is worth 6.8 Nokias.
Market capitalization:

o AAPL: 229.20B
o NOK: 33.74B

It's also still worth more than Microsoft.

(MSFT: 223.30B)

It was better before "Antennagate", of course. And it
will be again soon. ;)

25. So you're rooting for windfall profits?
Apple is sitting on tons of cash. Cash they could use to build factories and hire in the US. I love their products, but I'll never root for a megacorp.

I'll wait right here.

I wish Apple would move their operations here. But they won't be doing that any time soon and neither will anyone else.
