Sen. Coburn cooperating with federal investigation of Nevada Sen. John Ensign
Source: WaPo

By Carol D. Leonnig
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, July 24, 2010

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) said Friday that he has provided information to federal authorities investigating whether Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) broke the law in trying to keep secret his affair with a part-time staff member.

Before Ensign publicly admitted the adulterous relationship last June, Coburn had been a key behind-the-scenes counselor to Ensign. Coburn had urged his friend to end the affair with Cynthia Hampton and later tried to help him mediate the tension when her husband, a senior aide to the Nevada senator, confronted Ensign about the affair in late 2008.

On Friday, Coburn confirmed that the Justice Department had requested copies of particular e-mail correspondence and said he was voluntarily cooperating with the probe and was not served with a subpoena. Coburn did not disclose the nature of the correspondence but said only a small number of his e-mails met the prosecutors' specific request.

"Dr. Coburn has also said he will gladly cooperate with any inquiry into the matter," Coburn spokesman John Hart said. "He went above and beyond DOJ's request."

Ensign's attorney, Robert Walker, declined to comment on the development.

When asked last year about the affair, Coburn originally denied knowing about it, then he balked at discussing his conversations with Ensign by asserting they were "privileged," due to his position as an ordained deacon and a doctor. (Coburn is an obstetrician.) He later retreated from that position.

1. Sing, Tom, SING!
Everytime a RW hosebag rats out one of his fellow miscreants, an angel gets its wings.

3. Spitzer, although a governor and not a senator
was forced to resign just because he visited prostitutes. Now we have a senator who broke the law. He had a mistress, got her a job, got her husband a job, paid him a bribe. And he is still a senator and he is spewing crap against the present government. Oh I forgot. The difference he is a republican, and Spitzer was a Democrat. That's the way it goes folks. Republicans get a pass on everything. Look at the lack of prosecution for all the illegal and immoral activities of the previous administration, they were given a pass.

AND LISTEN TO ALL THE REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS NOW. IF THEY GET IN THEY WILL INVESTIGATE THE DEMOCRATS AND IMPEACH A PRESIDENT WHO HAS DONE NOTHING.

5. He was forcing taxpayers to spend their money on his mistress' job, husband's job, bribe, etc.
so of course it's CLEAR this goddawful cretin has involved the American public in his private life, and his crookedness, forced them to sponsor his escapades.

I don't think Spitzer put his call girl on the government's payroll. There's a huge difference, isn't there?

Republicans ARE a-holes. I'm still gagging over the Republican mayor Philip Giordano in Waterbury, Connecticut, who hired the "services" of a prostitute's 8 year old daughter and 10 year old neice and entertained them in his mayor's office.

There is no end to Republican worthlessness. Their self-important hypocrisy is the most impossibly bizarre aspect of their wildly laughable lives.

10. Conservatives love hypocrisy
If someone else messes up, they get to judge them, but if one of their own screw up, only gawd can judge them (and then he is the forgiving gawd). Same as demanding that others pull themselves out of their problems by their own bootstraps while pleading for divine intervention to get out of their own.

4. I really don't care who politicians choose for sleeping partners
I'd be much more interested in thorough investigations of quid-pro-quo campaign donations and perqs from corporations and PACs. Unless rape or harrasment is involved, let it go.

9. Anyone who takes bribes or sells infuence should be prosecuted, regardless of party or ideology
However, mistresses should be between the officials and their spouses/SO's -- whether we're talking Sanford, Spitzer, Clinton, or whoever. JMHO.

11. It surely "appears" that Ensign broke the fucking law. I could give..........
............a shit who sleeps with who and agree that is "generally" your private business. In Ensign's case he DEFINITELY crossed the line and probably broke some laws too. If Rangel is guilty of ANY felonies he should resign from Congress AND be prosecuted. If he is guilty of misdemeanors he should resign the chairmanship and be allowed to stay in Congress IF the voters want him.

6. Ya know the RW is screaming bloody murder over Rangel, but............
...........this Ensign bullshit has been going on for quite some time now and crickets. This piece of shit was banging his "friends" wife and then paid them both off. Whatever they find on Rangel, it has to be peanuts compared to this kind of two faced hypocritical shit.

12. Republicans are above the law.
No matter what law they break it's OK because Jesus forgives them. Unlike those godless Marxist Democrats...
