Heat wave in Moscow near to reach absolute record
Source: Ria Novosti

Temperature in Moscow is near to reach the absolute record of 1920 with 36.8 degrees Celsius (98.24 degrees Fahrenheit), Moscow meteorological bureau's official said on Saturday.

"At 17:00 Moscow time (11:00 GMT) the principal meteorological station at the National Exhibition Center registered 36.7 degrees Celsius breaking the record of 1936 with the maximum temperature for July of 36.5 degrees," the official said, adding the temperature was unlikely to rise.

July 24 became the hottest day for the 130-year history of the meteorological observations.

The meteorologists said the next five days Moscow may see more record hot days with Sunday's temperature of 33.5 degrees and 34.8 degrees on Tuesday. These figures are the highest since 1936

Last month was the hottest June ever recorded worldwide and the fourth consecutive month that the combined global land and sea temperature records have been broken, according to the US government's climate data centre.

The figures released last night by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) suggest that 2010 is now on course to be the warmest year since records began in 1880.

The trend to a warmer world is now incontrovertible. According to NOAA, June was the 304th consecutive month with a combined global land and surface temperature above the 20th-century average. The last month with below-average temperatures was February 1985. Each of the 10 warmest average global temperatures recorded since 1880 have occurred in the last 15 years with the previous warmest first half of a year in 1998.

1. Not only are we NOT doing anything about Climate change,
the government is insisting the whole planet remain in denial about it.
"business" as usual and all that.

22. Some pundit put his or her finger on the root of all many problems:
"Our government is not designed to deal with long term problems in a way that does no harm to incumbents in the short-term."

Remember when patriots were at least expected to do what was right for the country, even if they might have to make personal sacrifices as a result?

9. yeah, lol.
Tell us about more cooler than normal regions. That's so relevant and interesting. It's gotta be snowing someplace it doesn't usually snow, surely.

Do you for one second think that anyone on this board doesn't grok the difference between weather and climate?

Next time you have some anti-intellectual bullshit to spout kindly keep it to yourself.

5. I've got 2 dozen peaches on my tree, compared to
the normal 0-1, here in Maine. Also record raspberry season -- they started early and have been going strong.

19. Congratulations on your peaches!!!
That is rare where you are!! ENJOY!!!! :toast:

Your surviving peaches are like my sister's surviving fig (only 6 years in the ground this year since I got it for her). I never got chance to wrap it for her this past winter and wouldn't you know it, we had the WORST winter on record (75" of snow where our normal is 21")! Yet it not only survived all the way to the tippy top, it produced an unheard-of large breba crop (the Celeste variety normally doesn't do brebas and these did drop in early May), and is currently covered with a huge number of main crop that are about to ripen now. B-)

20. Sorry. I saw two previous comments about how things are colder in some regions...
...which put the pee in my corn flakes.

I guess i'm sick and tired of the immediate fall back so many people do onto anecdotes of snow and cold anytime the warming trend is reported. Of course, you're also giving an anecdote...about it getting warmer in your region, and those people could say "See, they do it on the other side too!" which is true. All that asside though, there's an undeniable global trend that too many people are whistling in the dark about.

21. for me, what I meant was that what is on its surface a boon
brings with it a sense of foreboding.

I am, of course, grateful that the exceptionally long and warm growing season, following a mild winter, is giving me a bounty of peaches.

We had an exceptionally short summer last year following a brutal winter (that reminded the multi-generational locals of winters their grand parents described), so part of me wants to believe that this is just evening things out. But I know that overall, the trend has been warmer and much, much wetter.

Scary. Apology accepted, of course. I'll eat a peach on your behalf ;)

12. To get through this heat, I'm keeping the Weather Channel icon on my desk set to Bar Harbor.
... instead of the mid-90s temps here in central PA. It psychologically helps me stay cool.

Enjoy those peaches and berries.

considering how hot is is now, I'm glad I moved north. I wonder how far north I'll have to move in 10 years. :(

14. What variety of peach are you growing?
I'm just south of the Twin Cities, MN, and I've been looking into trying a Reliance or Contender peach in my yard.

I hear you on the raspberries though, I can't pick them fast enough.

18. no idea. it came with the property
but until this year it's only produced 1 or maybe 2 rock hard little peaches in the warmer summers. This year it's acting like we're in Georgia. Early, early spring. Long, hot growing season so far...
