Rahm Emanuel 'surprised' Chicago mayor won't seek reelection (mum about running)

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday he was "surprised" by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's decision not to seek reelection but offered no hint as to whether he might be a candidate to succeed him.

"While Mayor Daley surprised me today with his decision to not run for reelection, I have never been surprised by his leadership, dedication and tireless work on behalf of the city and the people of Chicago," Emanuel said in an e-mailed statement Tuesday afternoon.

Daley's announcement in Chicago immediately triggered speculation in Washington about Emanuel's future. The former Chicago congressman had once set his sights on being speaker of the House, but being coaxed into joining the Obama administration scuttled those plans.

Since then, however, he's made no secret of his interest in running for office again, with the mayor's job at the top of his list.

1. Leon Panetta 4 "Mayor of Glendale"
Leon Panetta is doing a great job - /being himself/.
I think he would look "fetching" with an all-access pass to suburban LA Chinese buffets
And none of the Dudgeon of U.

Umm?
Who are ya anyway, and why should we tolerate another Pelosian
"Confederate Widow Catastrophe"

Government-authorised infiltration
Don't mean a thing
In a free land.
Peel slowly and see,

Non-Peel.

2. If Rahm is mayor of Chicago, we're all screwed.
In less than a year we'll dream of the good old days of Daley and his kooky schemes.

16. Sorry. You can have Tony Villaraigosa (mayor of LA) if you'd rather.
Big cities seem to attract crooked mayors.

I'd like to see Rahm out of the WH, though.

You said you'd leave the White House if Daley didn't run again.

Or is this a bit like mandates and cadillac taxes?

30. Impossible
Strong armed Daley? I don't think that could be done. And as a former Chicagoan, there is no effin way Rahm gets elected as mayor.

There are too many truly powerful, local, native Chicagoans, who would chew Rahm to pieces.

9. Hmmm.... Why Do I Think That Daley Gave Rahm A Head's Up Before He Made His Announcement.....
that he wasn't going to run again. Rahm had the statement all prepared. He was very, very complimentary of Daley. Guess who would need Daley's endorsement and support?

25. yeah, i am
actually. now you can say you met an actual walking talking ritchie daley fan. he has taken a city that was circling the drain when he was elected the first time, and transformed it in a myriad of ways. it still has it's bad spots, and always will. but it take intestinal fortitude along the lines of solid steel to get anything done here, and he did very, very much. and if i were the mayor i would have paid way less attention to what the city council wanted than he did. and i just don't put much stock in rumors. nobody has put a glove on him.

i have said a million times that i wish i had the time to go out and do a photo essay of all the things he has built, all the trees he planted, as the old man said.

He needs several because 2 of his are always being used.

Guess what he is always using other hand for? Hint: Gives a whole new meaning to "right hand man."

32. You are high
1. Rahm is not Irish.
2. What organization is he from?
3. How many people can he put in the streets?
4. How many people has he given a job to?
5. What does Mike Madigan and Jerimiah Joyce think of him? Not much.
6. He is not a south sider.

If he runs it is a way to get out of the White House and go back to his hedge fund. If he runs, he loses.
