The TelegraphThe device in the Greek embassy, which was a CD player connected to explosives and a detonator, was defused by bomb experts and there were also false alarms at the Venezuelan, Danish, Finnish, Kuwait and Monaco embassies.
It came after letter bombs went off last week at the Swiss and Chile embassies in Rome which left two people injured and were later claimed by anarchists.
Police had warned embassy post rooms to be on alert for other devices as the heavy Christmas mail eventually found its way through the notoriously slow Italian postal service.
Although no one has yet claimed responsibility for the Greek embassy device police in Rome said they were working on the theory it was connected to the other letter bombs.
