Poll: 61% oppose limiting union bargaining power

The public strongly opposes laws taking away the collective bargaining power of public employee unions as a way to ease state financial troubles, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll.

he poll found that 61% would oppose a law in their state similar to one being considered in Wisconsin, compared with 33% who would favor such a law.

Ohio and several other states that have new Republican governors and legislative majorities are considering laws that would reduce the power of government employee unions to bargain over benefits and work rules.

Wisconsin is the first state to consider the limits, prompting protests that have closed schools and drawn tens of thousands of protesters to the state Capitol in Madison.

10. Poll: Americans favor union bargaining rights
Source: USAToday

MADISON, Wis. — Americans strongly oppose laws taking away the collective bargaining power of public employee unions, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll. The poll found 61% would oppose a law in their state similar to such a proposal in Wisconsin, compared with 33% who would favor such a law.

Almost two-thirds of those polled say their states face budget crises, but respondents oppose or are split on potential solutions, from tax hikes to spending cuts.

Key results:

— 71% oppose increasing sales, income or other taxes while 27% are in favor that approach.

— 53% oppose reducing pay or benefits for government workers while 44% are in favor.

— 48% opposed reducing or eliminating government programs while 47% were in favor of cuts.

"This underlines the difficulty of solving these problems," Jeffrey Jones of Gallup says. "It's hard to find a consensus on what to do."

Republicans supported limiting bargaining by a 54%-41% margin. However, only 18% of Democrats favored restrictions while 79% were opposed. Independents were against bargaining restrictions by a 31% to 62% margain.

As good as this poll looks, when did Republicans ever do what Americans want? They answer only to Wall Street and the Chamber of Commerce.

Sure it is if you consider the opinions of the top 1% as having equal merit of the opinion of the bottom 99%, who know the problem isn't with spending, it's with revenue. If the rich pay their fair share of taxes, these problems go away.

13. Joe Scarborough pushing a different poll.
Link: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0211/49911.html

From the article:
"Gallup gauged Americans’ opinions toward labor unions 18 months ago when President Obama was pushing the Employee Free Choice Act—a proposal to strengthen collective bargaining laws to make union organizing easier. The results were brutal for unions. For the first time since Gallup began polling the issue in the 1930s, a majority of Americans believe that unions harm the U.S. economy. More broadly, Gallup reported that fewer than half of Americans approve of labor unions. That negative rating is all the more damning because it comes in the middle of an economic downturn—a time when union support should be at its highest. During the Great Depression, Gallup found 72 percent of Americans approved of unions."

The concluding sentence in this particular piece of fluff: "If he continues to ignore the shifting of political winds, Obama may soon find himself aligned with his biggest political supporters—but this time on the wrong side of history."

Obama as a rabid union supporter??? ROFL. Welcome to Morning Joe's alternate version of reality.
