Obama signs temporary extension of Patriot Act
Source: AP

Friday, February 25, 2011; 5:21 PM

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama has signed a three-month extension of key surveillance provisions of the Patriot Act.

The law extends two areas of the 2001 act. One provision allows law enforcement officials to set roving wiretaps to monitor multiple communication devices. The other allows them to ask a special court for access to business and library records that could be relevant to a terrorist threat.

A third provision gives the FBI court-approved rights for surveillance of non-American "lone wolf" suspects - those not known to be tied to specific terrorist groups.

Obama signed the three-month extension of the provisions Friday. They were to expire Monday.

3. BOO!
Shame on Obama for continuing this fascist legacy.

Turning public libraries into appendages of the police state.

Where's the hope and change?

6. I wrote my representatives
I wrote my representatives telling them not to support extending it, and they predictably (republican) wrote back that they thought the Patriot Act was all fine and dandy.

Looks like Obama is a bird of a feather on this issue.

Thanks a lot, dude.

When people ask me why I cannot in good conscience vote for you in 2012, I will link here.

Hope you are locking up a lot of Republican votes with this.

Oh wait, you're black.

You better hope they put Palin up against you, otherwise you are one term and out.

What's WRONG with Obama??
The Patriot Act was ILLEGAL, so WHY is Obama extending it,
even for three months!!!!

What Constitution did he study???? How could this man teach
Constitutional law for 12 years if he can't even FOLLOW the
laws of the land???

ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL
NO MORE EXTENSIONS!!

14. Business As Usual In the Corporate Government
On nation under the wealthy with liberty and justice for 2% of the population. Obama is just a puppet whose strings are pulled by the power structure. I voted and campaigned for him and I have to admit I was played for a fool. The problem is McCain and Palin would have been worse. In elections today we have the choice of doing the back stroke or butterfly stroke but they are both in the septic tank.

16. Damn.
Did anyone hear if he at least gave some lame speech claiming that he was doing this under duress and didn't want to support this any further after 3 months?

Based on his record I doubt it. But being cynical, I think we expect him to back the FBI in their 40,000+ civil rights violations, and be fine with allowing them to keep doing more. But it's nice to hope.

21. I am proud to live in Port Orford, OR. a small south coast town
of 1200 persons, that in a public ballot, voted to be a Patriot Act Free Zone. Only a hand-full of cities in the entire USA to do so. Stand up and say NO MORE ! This is not the time to be silent, meek and timid. Grow the movement here on this site and others. We are rapidly loosing our country and our world to very powerful interests that don't care a damn about about your lives. We need to take them down peacefully for the well being of all of us and it is our right to do so. How about it? Any thoughts?

30. Politix
Edited on Sat Feb-26-11 07:22 AM by Blandocyte
It's politix. Deals are made and compromises executed in order to stay in office and do some long term good. He's also the president of the dumbasses who think the pat act keeps us safe--do they get no voice? Big O has done some groundbreaking things. It's going to be a mixed bag, sort of like how adult life is. Just like the Tealiban is finding their dreams tempered by reality of politics. It's not going to be all unicorns and rainbows.

I had gotten pretty bummed about what I saw as the retreating of hope and change, but.started thinking about how hard it must be to walk the fine line Big O probably has to walk in order to remain a viable change agent. Some of the steps will probably go through mud and muck.
