Source: msnbc

A 20-year-old college student hired as police chief of a Mexican border town is reportedly seeking asylum in the United States.

Marisol Valles Garcia "received death threats from a criminal group that wanted to force her to work for them," a relative told AFP news service on Thursday, speaking on condition of anonymity. She "went to the United States along with two relatives and will seek asylum."

Andres Morales, a spokesman for the town of Praxedis G. Guerrero, said Valles Garcia was expected back at work on Monday after taking some time off to deal with family matters.

2. 20 year old college student?
Looks like times are getting really rough down there if they have a 20 year old as police chief. Maybe nobody else would volunteer for such hazardous duty. The criminals there are probably reading repig autobiographies by the truckload to learn their methods.

4. wow, Mexico has gotten so outta hand that even police chiefs are unsafe? wow
I am just astounded and have mixed feelings. If Garcia comes to America, she'll probably be safer herself. But what about the people of Parxedis, the town she's supposed to be serving?

6. Not even old enough to legally buy alcohol here in the U.S. and she's the police chief!
Seriously, we and they need to end the insane so called "War on Drugs" and try some logical, functional, wise and compassionate policies for a change.

Thanks for the thread, Viva_La_Revolution.

7. That didn't take long at all
She's only been on the job a few months. I'm sure if she spent much longer on the job without totally caving to the cartels she would have some serious problems.

Praxedis G. Guerrero official: 20-year-old police chief is not seeking asylum in U.S.

by Aileen B. Flores \ El Paso Times
Posted: 03/04/2011 06:57:28 AM MST

An official of the town of Praxedis G. Guerrero denied that police chief Marisol Valles Garcia is asking for asylum in the U.S.

Valles Garcia, 20, made international headlines last year when she became a police chief in the violent Valley of Juárez.

On Thursday, Mexican news reports said Valles Garcia was asking for asylum after receiving death threats. But town secretary Andres Morales said that information had not been confirmed. "Right now, these are rumors," he said.

Morales said Valles Garcia requested some days off to attend to personal matters concerning the health of her child. Morales said Valles Garcia remains the police chief of the town and she is expected to be back at work on Monday.
