CNN: 3 Marines killed west of Baghdad; 1 Army soldier killed in Taji
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 01:44 PM by VolcanoJen
Just released by the Pentagon... will post link when it emerges.

Transcript, thanks to my Tivo:

2:37 pm edt

"This just in to CNN. We are being told that one U.S. soldier has been killed in Taji, that's just north of Baghdad. That's coming from the U.S. Army. We are also getting word that three more U.S. Marines have been killed west of Baghdad. That's also coming to us from the military. Once again, three more U.S. Marines killed, one more Army soldier. We will continue to follow the news as it comes out of Iraq."

2. It's just... well, it's devastating.
The disinformation and confusion is even more devastating.

If they won't tell us what's really going on over there, then it leads me to believe it's much, much worse than imagined.

I'm still searching for the link; I know that there has been much confusion about casualties over the past few days and I certainly don't want to contribute to it. :-(

3. *Cries*
I can't believe how many Americans are completely indifferent to all of this. They basically have the attitude, "Well, that's somebody else's kid." or "Atleast we're killing a lot of those Arabs.".

6. Unclear. They are updating tolls from as far back as three days a lot of
the time. That's because it makes less news that way and they spread the pain around a little.

11. NO. I think this makes it six (four were unaccounted for in earlier report
The REUTERS story linked here with the headline "6 More Soldiers Die in Iraq" was based on a release of figures. At that time, only TWO of the SIX had been specified. My list then looked like this:

9-Apr: 6(?)

1 - 1ID killed in attack on supply convoy, Abu Ghraib;
1 - 1AD killed by IED near Camp Cook, Sadr City Baghdad;
4 not yet specified - unconfirmed

What this update does is fill in the specifics for the other four. So,

9-Apr: 6

1 - 1ID killed in attack on supply convoy, Abu Ghraib;
1 - 1AD killed by IED near Camp Cook, Sadr City Baghdad;
3 - I MEF, killed in fighting "west of Baghdad" (probably fallujah)
1 - 1ID (?) killed in Taji

So, not 10 confirmed, but 6 confirmed.

12. The CNN announcer emphasized "MORE"
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 02:00 PM by VolcanoJen
She said 3 more U.S. Marines, 1 more U.S. soldier. I do think you're right and that this report accounts for the four previously unconfirmed.

I'm so fucking confused and frustrated. :-(

ON EDIT: Lunaville lists 2 confirmed deaths today, so adding these four would make it 6, so far, on April 9.

18. Yes. I don't think "more" means "more than six" in this case
Since the six was not reported except as a report of the REUTERS story. The REUTERS story is somewhat strange. Basically, what the reporter did was look at the deaths as of yesterday, then the losses reported today, and report the difference.

When CNN or any cable news reports "more," I think they are speaking very generally: "More than we said before."

19. No. Not on top of the six we heard about before.
Because we only "heard about" TWO before, in any specific way. This accounts for the FOUR OF THE SIX that we didn't have any specifics on.

SIX TOTAL for today, at least as confirmed with locations and details.

The censorship has become overwhelming.

They talk about Iraq 24/7, so Americans will know
there's a problem. But give no info on what's
happening.

Live feed from Clancy saying everything's calm in Baghdad.

Except for that 120 mm shell in the Sheraton tennis court.

Not one word about Abu Gharib convoy.

Or that the reason for the lull in Fallujah
is because of the 1000's that forced there way in.

This whole thing could go up this weekend.

And expect a Bad News dump at 4:30 DC time.
Good Friday is behind only Thanksgivng
and Xmas Eve.

15. such a useless waste of promising young lives . . .
my local paper runs a daily tribute to servicemen and women killed in Iraq . . . there's generally a photo, and there's always a short background piece telling a little something about each individual . . . I'm always struck by how many of these needless deaths are young people just barely out of high school -- 18, 19, 20 years old . . . each with a whole lifetime ahead of them, each lifetime cut short by BushCo's drive for U.S. hegemony and the sea of oil beneath Iraq . . . and all I can thinks is how sad . . . how very, very sad . . .

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - At least two U.S. soldiers and a civilian truck driver were killed by guerrillas in Iraq on Friday and three more Marines were killed west of Baghdad the previous day, the U.S. military said in a statement.

It said the soldiers who died on Friday were a 1st Cavalry Division soldier killed in a roadside bomb and small arms attack in Taji, north of Baghdad, and a 13th Corps Support Command soldier killed on an attack on a convoy near Baghdad airport.

The convoy attack also killed a civilian truck driver and wounded 12 people, the statement said.

Thanks alot for the welcome, and the tone I must say is more redeeming in that it seems rooted from the correct perspective. Meaning what you say is very true without the usual democratic and/or republican attempt to sugarcoat.
