Quake causes many injuries in Japan, tsunami

TOKYO | Fri Mar 11, 2011 1:03am EST

((Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 7.9 struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Friday, shaking buildings in the capital Tokyo, causing "many injuries," at least one fire and triggering a 10-meter (30-ft) tsunami warning, NHK television and witnesses reported.

The public broadcaster showed black smoke billowing from a building in Odaiba, a Tokyo suburb, and bullet trains to the north of the country were halted.

Television showed cars bobbing in water along side fishing boats. A 50 cm tsunami hit Japan's northern coast.

"The building shook for what seemed a long time and many people in the newsroom grabbed their helmets and some got under their desks," Reuters correspondent Linda Sieg said. "It was probably the worst I have felt since I came to Japan more than 20 years ago."

114. Yes, missed fixing it on the Greatest Page by 3 minutes.
If you re-edit your post AFTER it gets to the GP, it will fix it. If you don't, it will stay with your initial headline. When we go to DU3, this will not be a problem, since you will be able to edit after one hour.

4. According to the USGS earthquake site
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 01:17 AM by kentauros
it looks like it's actually two 7.9 quakes, very close and at different depths:

MAP____7.9____2011/03/11 05:46:24____38.322____142.369____24.4____NEAR THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN

edit: actually, it's two different seismic centers reporting:

First one from USGS NEIC (WDCS-D)

Second one from NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

195. Maybe triangulated with a different set of seismometers.
Have to account for things like rock formations and strata, areas where the sea floor is more or less dense depending upon the type of rock, etc. Relfections from one rock boundary to another. Same reason a city on the other side of a plate may not experience the shaking that a city on the same side of the plate as where the earthquake originated would feel even though the two cities may be the same distance.

These are mostly automated systems, feeding data into this list.

TOKYO (AP) - The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii says a tsunami warning is in effect for a large swath of the Pacific after a magnitude 7.9 earthquake hit Japan.
A tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and U.S. state of Hawaii.
Japan's NHK says a small tsunami hit the shore near the epicenter around 3 p.m local time.
Japan's meteorological agency warns that a tsunami as high as 20 feet (6 meters) could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicenter.
The agency says the quake struck at 2:46 p.m. Friday at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast.

Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #1 issued 03/10/2011 at 9:58PM PST

This is a Tsunami Information Statement for California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.

Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerouse to coasts outside the source region. The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center is investigating the event to determine the level of danger. More information will be issued as it becomes available.

At 9:46 PM Pacific Standard Time on March 10, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.9 occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.)

Pacific coastal regions outside California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska should refer to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center messages for information on the event.

Messages will be issued hourly by the WCATWC until the event status is upgraded to a warning or advisory, or until the center has determined that the event poses no threat to the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table. (NOTE: Travel time maps and tables indicate forecasted times only, not that a wave dangerous to the U.S. and Canadian coasts was generated.)

She reports magnitude 6 and 7 + shakings, some of which were happening as I talked to her on the phone.

It has been going on for over ten minutes, from what I could get out of her.

She's scheduled to come back to L.A. this Saturday...

...at just before 7 AM Pacific time.

She won't be coming back tomorrow as scheduled.

But of more concern is the fact that she is unable to contact her sister and sister's family, who live northeast of Tokyo, which is not good.

As I spoke to her, she was still feeling moderate to large aftershocks.

Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 07:55 PM by GReedDiamond
...my time in Los Angeles, which makes it now around 9:44 AM in Tokyo, as I post this.

I'm very glad that her telephone is still working, and needless to say, I hope it stays functional.

She was unable to sleep through the night, due to continuing aftershocks, but she sounds pretty calm, and tells me not to worry.

She has been in Tokyo for almost six months, taking care of her 80+ year old parents, particularly her mother, who has had some significant medical issues over the last year. She reports that her parents are doing alright, which is good news.

I told her I was concerned about the Fukushima Nuke Plant, but she says "don't worry."

She has still been unable to contact her sister or any of her sister's children or husband.

This is what worries us the most, but I'm still worried about the nuclear power plants, I just heard on MSNBC that there is a second plant, in addition the the Fukushima plant, with cooling problems. (ON EDIT: I just saw that the second plant with "pressure problems" is apparently also at the Fukushima complex.)

Thanks Hissyspit, it's good to have a sympathetic ear at DU, I really appreciate it.

196. I, too, am very concerned about the power plants.
My understanding is that there is still a very real possibilty of a Three-Mile Island or even Chernobyl-type event. Maybe not, but it most assuredly not clear. When I was posting about the nuclear plant news early this morning, I was typically skeptical of the public pronouncements that concern was unnecessary.

But the word on her Sister's family is very worrisome. as well. It may just be a communication/contact problem. Please keep posting any updates you may get, if you feel comfortable doing so. It became more and more clear as I watched the coverage overnight that this was worse than I initially expected, even as I had my "whoa" reaction upon seeing the initial news alert of a 7.9 Richter Scale earthquake. We all hope for the best possible news here.

200. Update, Saturday...
...which is Sunday morning in Tokyo, around 10:28 AM as I post his.

The good news is, she has gotten word, indirectly from another relative, that her sister/sister's family are safe, but without power.

No major damage apparently, everybody's well, so we are all greatly relieved to know that.

Now the immediate worry for my girlfriend is food, she has only maybe two day's worth of food in the house, so she will have to go in search of food soon. I see on CNN that stores are being cleaned out, so I hope she can stock up without too much trouble.

The aftershocks are still happening at a rate of 2 or 3 per hour, I don't know if they're getting used to them, or really burnt out on them, I'd be burnt out.

The nuke situation is still disturbing as well, but so far, she and her family have been fortunate given the circumstances.

Lastly, she's hoping to try and reschedule her return flight to Los Angeles for Sunday, March 20, but she is so far unable to contact anybody at the airline.

30. Saw that too - got my husband up to watch - we're on the West Coast
of Vancouver Island - at sea level at present and will keep a close eye on things overnight. I lived through the Loma Prieta quake in SF. This is nearly 100 times bigger and I can't imagine that. If anywhere is prepared for a big quake, it's Japan. I don't think you can plan for an 8.8 though. :scared:

I hope fatalities are minimal

60. Someone also needs to give their anchor/newswoman a quick education
into the Metric System! She keeps calling it a "13 foot" wave, when we've already seen the reports that it's a 13 meter wave. That's almost 33 feet!

I have to wonder how many American reporters get lost when they have to go overseas and can't figure out meters and km...

84. Yes, she changed it to calling it a 30 foot wave.
Although in fairness they cut to a live English speaking Japanese news channel and they were saying a 4 meter tsunami.

If it were Friday it would have been lockup reruns as well. MSNBC has a long way to go to become a serious news network imo.

194. The anchorwoman I was watching at the time I made my comment
wasn't Rick Sanchez ;)
Maybe he should have phrased his question as "Nine meters in ignorant-American English is...?" :P

Oh, I did learn something very telling about why the metric system has never been adopted in the US. It's all thanks to how we measure and record plots of land. (There's probably more to it than that, but this was the biggest hurdle compared to all the others.)

I'm guessing that no one wants the daunting (or next to impossible) task of converting all those legal land documents to metric, nor do they want to create new documents in metric until all previous documents are in metric

97. God, I agree.
Nothing worse than an anchor who is talking about a tragedy like they were talking about the new shoes they bought yesterday. CTV News Channel here in Canada has an anchor like that. The other day a Libyan-Canadian was on CTV, sobbing after describing the carnage his family had told him about, and begging and pleading for the Canadian government to do something to save his family and all Libyans who were dying, and the anchor was like, "Well, thanks for sharing!" in a freakishly cheery voice. I was like, "are you shitting me?" It was totally inappropriate! This CNN anchor reminds me of that.

100. Crazy right here. CNN and BBC World are simulcasting NHK World footage
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 02:44 AM by alp227
scary stuff right here. CNN apparently defers to CNN International feed during American after hours, that's why the host had a British or Australian accent and there was a globe over the CNN logo. And BBC World News channel was just showing the NHK World feed and said that the BBC in London had power problems. This is gonna dominate the headlines for days and days. Of course both channels had their newsreaders insert their own updates. My local ABC, Fox, and NBC channels (I'm in California) are breaking this story, while my CBS station is showing the David Letterman show.

101. Hawaii - Urgent Action Shoud be Taken to Protect Lives/Property!
EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
0259 AM HST FRI 11 MAR 2011

116. Still no good info for my neck of the BEACH!
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 03:23 AM by sce56

Well looks good so far for me and my family!

To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center

It does indeed worry me as this is my home that I'm sitting in as I type in the Harbor.

but as I get ready to post the TV now says Tsunami Watch for So Cal! :(

127. Finally updated
To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Watch and Advisory #3 issued 03/10/2011 at 11:33PM PST

UPDATED MAGNITUDE TO 8.8

The Tsunami Advisory continues in effect for the coastal areas of Alaska from Chignik Bay, Alaska to Attu, Alaska.

The Tsunami Watch continues in effect for the coastal areas of California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska from the California-Mexico border to Chignik Bay, Alaska.

A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected. Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

A Tsunami Watch means that all coastal residents in the watch area should prepare for possible evacuation. A tsunami watch is issued to areas which will not be immediately impacted by the tsunami. Watch areas will either be upgraded to warning or advisory status, or canceled.

At 9:46 PM Pacific Standard Time on March 10, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.8 occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.) This earthquake has generated a tsunami which could cause damage to coastal regions in a warning or advisory. The waves are expected to first reach Shemya, Alaska at 12:13 AM AKST on March 11. Estimated tsunami arrival times and maps along with safety rules and other information can be found on the WCATWC web site.

Measurements of reports of tsunami activity:

TSUNAMI OBSERVED ON DEEP OCEAN BUOY
UPGRADED MAGNITUDE TO 8.8

Tsunamis can be dangerous waves that are not survivable. Wave heights are amplified by irregular shoreline and are difficult to forecast. Tsunamis often appear as a strong surge and may be preceded by a receding water level. Mariners in water deeper than 600 feet should not be affected by a tsunami. Wave heights will increase rapidly as water shallows. Tsunamis are a series of ocean waves which can be dangerous for several hours after the initial wave arrival. DO NOT return to evacuated areas until an all clear is given by local civil authorities.

Pacific coastal regions outside California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska should refer to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center messages for information on the event.

This message will be updated in 30 minutes or sooner if the situation warrants. The tsunami message will remain in effect until further notice. For further information stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, your local TV or radio stations, or see the WCATWC web site.

154. Al-Jez: Deep ocean sensor bouys reporting 1-3 meter rises, at least one bouy presumed destroyed
On Al-Jazeera a few minutes ago. What I presume are some serious motherfucking tsunami warnings for Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast including Oregon and Alaska. The thing about these deep ocean readings is that a deep ocean bouy which rises 1 meter alone....I don't know what that translates to when the wave finally hits land, but it ain't good. I'm hoping the circumference increase because of the distance will bleed off enough energy that by the time it reaches Oregon it doesn't have too much energy. About half the places I'm familiar with on the Oregon coast are pretty low-lying.

As far as Hawaii and all of the islands in between, my most sincere prayers are going out for their safety.

PB
