Qaddafi Warns West on No-Flight Zone
Source: NYT

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK and ELISABETH BUMILLER
Published: March 19, 2011

TRIPOLI, Libya — Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi urged President Obama and European leaders on Saturday to hold back from enforcing a no-flight zone over Libya amid reports that his forces continued to attack rebels in the eastern city of Benghazi. Colonel Qaddafi’s comments came as Western leaders met in Paris to consider military intervention against Libyan government forces. On Friday, after the United Nations Security Council had given its authorization, Mr. Obama ordered Colonel Qaddafi to carry out an immediate cease-fire, withdraw his forces from rebel-held cities and stop all attacks on Libyan civilians or face military action from the United States and its allies in Europe and the Arab world.

But in the letters — one addressed to Mr. Obama and a second to President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain, and Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations — Colonel Qaddafi left himself little room to back down.

“Libya is not yours. Libya is for all Libyans,” Colonel Qaddafi wrote, according to a government spokesman. “This is injustice, it is clear aggression, and it is uncalculated risk for its consequences on the Mediterranean and Europe.”

“You will regret it if you take a step toward intervening in our internal affairs,” he added.

7. Time for the US to pull back from Iraq, Afghanistan, and stay out of Libya.
It's the West that's having delusions that it can maintain hegemony against Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

2. This guy is totally deranged
One day he calls for a ceasefire, then fires on his own people AGAIN, the next he's warning us like he has to power to stop anything we would do.

5. I'm sure it's a strategy to maintain power.
And it could be a good one, I do not know. Few were predicting he'd still be around at this point.

French Planes Fly Over Libya as Qaddafi Defies Cease-Fire Calls

March 19, 2011, 10:08 AM EDT

By Helene Fouquet and Leon Mangasarian

March 19 (Bloomberg) -- French military jets flew over Libya, ready to enforce an air-exclusion zone to halt Muammar Qaddafi’s attacks on rebels, as Western leaders met in Paris to consider their next steps.

The planes were in the air not far from Libya this afternoon and were ready to carry out air strikes if there are orders from President Nicolas Sarkozy, a military official with knowledge of the preparations said on condition of anonymity.

6. "Libya is for all Libyans," so let's send foreign planes to bomb it?
Makes little sense to me.

8. Most of his Air Force is grounded because of lack of maintainance
and spare parts...and some of those flying crash on their own. If I were flying for Ghadaffi, I'd land at one of the rebel-held airports and become a hero rather than wait for the government to collapse.

11. Perhaps they were certain they would never be seriously shot at.
Let's hope they will 'desert' the blood-thursty fool soon.
