Republicans Are Pursuing a Wider Field for 2012 Race
Source: The New York Times

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Republican leaders, activists and donors, anxious that the party’s initial presidential field could squander a chance to capture grass-roots energy and build a strong case against President Obama at the outset of the 2012 race, are stepping up appeals for additional candidates to jump in, starting with Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana.

“I’m getting letters from all over the damn country and some of them are pretty moving,” Mr. Daniels said in an interview last week at the Capitol in Indianapolis, where his friends believe he is inching closer to exploring a candidacy. He added, “It can’t help but affect you.”

The first contests of the primary are at least eight months away, and most of the candidates have yet to fully open their campaigns, but some party leaders worry that Republicans are making a bad first impression by appearing tentative about their prospects against Mr. Obama and allowing Donald J. Trump to grab headlines in the news vacuum of the race’s early stages.

“The race needs more responsible adults who can actually do the job,” said Fergus Cullen, a former chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party.

He's said the GOP should drop the social conservative issues. No way he'll ge the nomination with that position.

32. they need a Bush on steroids: an ignorant bully
that's what their base wants.

the Donald is a variation on the model, but not much of one.

Because of his bluster, the rubes won't notice he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, just as they didn't notice with Bush.

22. I am talking to the idea played by the article, that the "repukes" were looking for moderation, and
that the republican idea of moderation, is not moderate

Of course I am not addressing people who belong to DU, that makes no sense

7. This should be fun to watch.
Is it possible for such narrow minded people to pursue a wider field of candidates? Their brains are probably over heating already.

11. Smart move as Obama has lost the enthusiasm of his base
Although the Republicans paid people to canvas, etc. for them, these people did not have their heart in the effort. They would simply leave a flyer and not return as I did until I could actually speak to the voter. The Republican paid workers were not at the early voting, they were not out canvassing at all hours, they were not passionate. In 2012, the landscape could easily be reversed. Obama may have billions for his campaign from Goldman Sacks and other big money donors to whom he sold out his base, but I know so many former passionate liberals and moderates who will sit on their pocket books and not volunteer their time...and maybe not even vote again as in 2010. Until the Democrats start acting like Democrats again, many Democratic voters will simply not support them.

I don't have a short memory, I all too well remember the 8 years of Bush. I can see all to well see what this country would be like if we were to lose the Senate and White House.

30. of course they weren't as enthusiastic
after eight damaging, lying, greedy years of Little Boots this country was sinking faster than the Titanic. Look at Little Boot's deficit, what about 89%, look at the major decline in job creation--all happening while Little Boot's was shoveling the treasury out the door to his greedy "constituents." Privatizing part of the military so his war profiteering friends could make millions, billions while building substandard structure, giving substandard services. Allowing even more deregulation so wall street could bamboozle most of the world while raking in billions.

Yeah, and the same repugs have the answer--yeah, we screwed up the government, decimated the economy, so that our corporate friends can get even more pieces of the government pie. I mean we'll just privatize everything because ya'll know that those for profit corporations just do it better.:sarcasm:

12. The problem with the GOP is anyone people have heard of is bat-shit crazy or crooked
Donald Trump...Michele Bachmann...Sarah Palin...Mitt Romney...Mike Huckabee...Newt Gingrich...Jeb Bush...Ron & Rand Paul...

Just about any rethug you can name that most people would recognize has considerable baggage, is bat-shit crazy, or is crooked.

If they dig up somebody that nobody has ever heard of, do they really stand a chance?

13. Better check with the Kochs. They will pick the nominee.
Guaranteed it will be the most racist campaign in U.S. history, even more so than post-Civil War.

That's how the powers that be in the GOP have the only chance to win.

15. IMHO, the Republicans are throwing the 2012 election, then Jeb Bush runs in 2016
Edited on Sat Apr-30-11 02:47 PM by stockholmer
Again IMHO, Jeb Bush, to a lesser extent Rick Perry (he is an empty suit from Texas, but that didnt stop the despicable W), and even more remotely, John Thune (General Patreus was kept in the field of battle, so couldnt run, plus his commands are a quagmire) were the only possible victors against Obama in 2012. This, of course, is contingent on a 'black swan' event not taking place.

I think that as long as the meta-memes of the war machine rolling on and the banksters raping/gutting of the country are not touched by Obama (so far both are smelling like roses), the systemic controllers of the Republican side of the false left-right paradigm can live with 4 more years of Obama.

Not to mention the hellish nature (which they will use to just bury any 2016 Dem candidate) that will make up the next 5 years in the States, as it slides into the ooze of lost empire, dollar collapse and destroyed internal economy matrices.

I spoke to my mother this morning (who agrees with me on politics pretty much). I told her I thought the Republicans would pick Romney. She said she is hearing a lot about the governor of Indiana. So, he has already picked up support (not from my mother, rest assured.)
