Bin Laden killing boosts Obama's approval rating

By Jane Cowan and Timothy McDonald

- United States president Barack Obama has seen a huge bounce in his approval ratings amid widespread praise for the killing of the Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Praise for the Obama administration has come from both sides of politics, with no denying it has delivered an important victory in the fight against terrorism.

The demise of bin Laden has revived debate about harsh interrogation techniques like waterboarding, with one detainee who was subjected to the treatment reportedly providing a crucial lead.

A new poll, commissioned by the New York Times and CBS News, shows support for Mr Obama has risen sharply, jumping 11 percentage points in one month. Fifty-seven per cent of Americans now say they approve of the president's overall job performance and his handling of foreign policy.

Another recent poll says the same sort of thing...

Bin Laden Killing Spurs Six-Point Rise in Obama Approval Rating
By Jonathan D. Salant - May 5, 2011 6:30 PM

President Barack Obama’s job approval rating rose by 6 points after U.S. forces killed terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.

The survey found 52 percent of U.S. voters approving of Obama’s performance in office, the highest level for him in two years and 6 points higher than the 46 percent rating he received from those surveyed in the days before he announced bin Laden’s death late on May 1.

Those disapproving of the president’s performance declined to 40 percent following the attack that killed bin Laden in Pakistan, down from 48 percent right before the raid.

The Quinnipiac poll shows a jump in Obama’s standing among independents, with 47 percent of those surveyed May 2-3 approving of his performance, up from 41 percent of those interviewed April 26-May 1.

7. i've got a feeling that the Obama presidency is mirroring that of Bush 41:
Fall 1990: Bush 41 reneged on his "read my lips, no new taxes" pledge after compromising with Congressional Democrats. "From the historic high of 79% early in his term, Bush's approval rating had fallen to 56% by mid-October 1990." (Wikipedia)
Spring 1991: The Gulf War raises Bush's approval rating to nearly 90%, the highest in his term.
1992: The recession continues, and Bush gets de-elected in favor of the Democratic candidate Bill Clinton.

December 2010: Obama signs bill renewing George W. Bush tax cuts; in 2008, Obama promised to roll back those tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Although that original plan passed the House, it didn't get cloture in the Senate.
mid-April 2011: Obama's lowest approval rating according to Gallup, 41%.
May 2011: Osama bin Laden killed, and of course Obama's approval rating rushes up.
But the economy still sucks...

8. agreed
and the economy is certainly not helping his cause. However, the big difference from 1992 is the opponents (aka GOP) got nobody. Don't get complacent and keep up the fight. I think it's extremely unwise to change horses midstream, especially when, while not perfect, the horse in the race is definitely better than yer typical pub indeed

9. I was expectiong a bigger bump. You're right - the economy tempered it
The President should focus on job creation, and not the deficit. Also, crack down on those speculators driving up gas prices.
