Democrats, Republicans edge closer on debt deal

WASHINGTON — The outlines of a deal that would allow the United States to avert a debt default emerged on Thursday as top Republican and Democratic lawmakers held their first meeting aimed at cutting the bloated U.S. deficit.
Other political news of note

Republicans edged toward a White House plan that would cut some spending now and set long-term deficit reduction targets, but said more difficult decisions on taxes and healthcare spending would have to wait until after the 2012 election.

A top Republican lawmaker, Paul Ryan, said there would be no immediate "grand slam" agreement on tackling the budget deficit, expected to reach $1.4 trillion this year and a major worry for Americans and investors.

I hope this isn't another deal where environmental projects get slashed 30% and more animals are thrown off the endangered species list so they can be hunted by slobbering maniacs.

5. Here's a deal - every day that a budget is not passed by the October 1 beginning
of the fiscal year, Congress will receive no pay, nor perks, nor office space, nor haircuts, nor ANY OTHER thing that comes from tax revenues, PLUS a fine of $10,000 per day EACH, payable daily, for having the contempt for the American people that drags out the one thing that Congress is actually supposed to do and makes it a freak show,
