FAA: 2 dead after 2 planes collide over NY woods

WAWAYANDA, N.Y. — Authorities say two small planes collided over a wooded area in upstate New York, killing two people and critically injuring a third.

The two single-engine planes, both Pipers, crashed about 3 p.m. Monday in the hamlet of New Hampton, about 60 miles north of New York City, said state trooper Arthur Worden.

Capt. Joseph Tripodo tells the Times Herald-Record of Middletown that one plane burst into flames and that the wreckage is "substantial."
