North Dakota river to surpass record levels
Source: CNN

Minot, North Dakota (CNN) -- The summer flooding in Minot, North Dakota, will enter record territory Friday morning as the Souris River surges toward a peak, days ahead of original forecasts by the National Weather Service.

The river, which stood 1,556 feet above sea level early Friday, is forecast to top the 1881 record of 1,558 feet by mid-morning and peak at 1564.5 feet late Saturday or early Sunday. That would put the Souris more than six feet higher than the old record.

The waters were rushing into the area faster and in greater amounts than expected, overflowing a lake near the city, officials said, exacerbating the region's flood concerns.

But Minot Mayor Curt Zimbelman said Thursday that no new evacuations had been ordered, even though "the flows coming into Lake Darling are reaching the lake quicker and at a greater volume than predicted."

1. And in other flooding news...
This is overshadowing the floods on the Missouri River that promise to last all summer long.

Levee Breach Prompts Evacuations

Evacuations are underway in Atchison County, Missouri, after a levee breach.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday, local officials witnessed the levee breach, which is about three miles north of Brownville, Nebraska. The breach prompted a flash-flood warning, which will remain in effect until 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Those living west of Interstate 29 in the Missouri River flood plain are being evacuated, which includes the Missouri towns of Langdon, Watson and Phelps City. The evacuation affects about 250 homes.

Officials say the levee breach is not affecting the Cooper Nuclear Station in Brownville, or the town of Brownville.

Mills County Evacuation Ordered

Mills county authorities have issued a mandatory evacuation order for residents of Interstate 29 and south of Gaston Avenue to the Fremont County line. Residents in the area are required to evacuate as soon as possible, but no later than 4:00 on Friday.

This is due to the rise of interior ground water east of the Mills County levee system. A number of roads in the area are becoming impassable.
