Conrad Black faces resentencing in Chicago
By MICHAEL TARM, Associated Press – 17 mins ago

CHICAGO – The long-running legal saga of a once-powerful media mogul whose newspaper empire spanned several continents reaches a climax on Friday when a federal judge decides whether to send him back to prison or let him remain free based on time served.

Prosecutors who brought the fraud case against Conrad Black, 66, have depicted him as a devil-may-care elitist who looks down his nose at the rest of humanity. The defense counters he is actually a gentleman, unbowed by adversity, who quietly goes about helping others.

Which portrayal U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve accepts may factor into her ruling on whether to return Black to a Florida federal prison for several more years or, as his lawyers have asked, to resentence him to time served.

A jury convicted Black in 2007, and St. Eve at the time sentenced him to 6 1/2 years for defrauding investors in Hollinger International Inc.

1. He's the DEFINITION of "elitist who looks down his nose at humanity"
And pressure is mounting here in Canada to have him stripped of his Order of Canada medal.

He's not exactly popular here for renouncing his Canadian citizenship to accept a gig with the House of Lords in Britain.

2. Rich people have a get out of jail free card.
They pay a legal dream team to cry for them in court and the judge caves in.

4. Judges aren't inclined to show much leniency
to convicted criminals incapable of admitting wrong doing.

"He fails to acknowledge his central role in destroying Hollinger International through greed and lies, instead blaming the government and others for what he describes as an unjust persecution," prosecutors said.

12. Back to the slammer! "Conrad Black sent back to prison in US after losing fraud appeal"

Conrad Black sent back to prison in US after losing fraud appeal
Chicago court rules fallen press baron, 66, must serve another year in jail on charges of fraud and obstruction of justice
Dominic Rushe in New York guardian.co.uk, Friday 24 June 2011 19.54 BST

Conrad Black will return to prison, a judge has ruled, after the fallen press baron lost his appeal on a fraud conviction. His wife, journalist Barbara Amiel, collapsed in court as the verdict was read.

Black, 66, was convicted by a Chicago court in 2007 of defrauding investors in his media company Hollinger International and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in jail, and served over two years at the Coleman Federal Correctional prison in Florida.

Judge Amy St Eve, who originally sentenced Black, said she had been impressed by letters sent on behalf of Black by his fellow inmates. But she ruled that he must serve 42 months, meaning Black, who was made a life peer in Britain in 2001, will serve another year in jail.

As St Eve made her ruling in Chicago, Amiel collapsed, and had to be escorted out of the court.
