Hackers post BART cops' personal information
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

(08-17) 12:14 PDT OAKLAND -- Hackers carried out the second cyber-attack on BART within the past week today, breaking into the website of the union that represents the transit system's rank-and-file police and releasing a roster of 102 officers along with their home addresses, e-mail account addresses and passwords for the site.

The roster was published on a separate website, where the hackers wrote, "Yet another success."

Hackers have said they will strike back at BART for temporarily shutting down underground cellular and wi-fi service Thursday, a move BART made to try to quell a planned antipolice protest in downtown San Francisco. The protest did not materialize.

A loose-knit group known as Anonymous breached a BART website, myBART.org, on Sunday and released names, addresses, passwords and in some cases phone numbers for more than 2,000 customers.

1. This is so wrong.
Why attack the individual employees like this?

2. because individual cops can say no to violence
but the blue wall of silence persists

the only good "apple" is cop that actively works to prevent this kind of shit.

all other cops, with their wall of silence, are bad apples.

12. Because cops don't do anything but just kill people, right?
Edited on Wed Aug-17-11 06:28 PM by Tiggeroshii
When there's an accident on the freeway, and it's up to the highway patrol to cone off the freeway so that nobody else can get hurt, find somebody to do cpr on an injured motorcylcist and call in the rest of the emergency vehicles: Whoops, there they are just shooting people!

When they are called in to direct traffic in the middle of busy intersections, risking their life -oh hey they're just killing people!

And shit, when there's an explosion and chaos in a large metropolitan area, it's not the police and public safety individuals that are the first in line -they're just roaming the streets indiscriminately murdering people, right?

Look. I know cops do some bad shit, and there need to be people working against that, taking them to court, challenging the police unions, which I agree have too much power. And there ARE a LOT of cops who do that, whether you like it or not. Most cops by and large are people who are putting their lives on the line for the public good, and they should not be punished because of what others do.

I guess if we had it your way, we'd just not have police at all, right? Cut their budgets by 30%? Let's try that out and see what happens. Wait, Britain kinda did that. How did it work out again?

3. I fail to see how this could be called "terrorizing people"
BART's union president, Jesse Sekhon, said today, "These people are criminals and we're going to forward this information to the FBI. These people need to be brought to justice. They can't be terrorizing people."

Referring to the publication of officers' home addresses, Sekhon said, "It's very concerning, but you know what, we'll deal with it. Nothing is protected in the electronic age - lesson learned."

It also needs to be noted that
"The group then organized a protest Monday that forced BART to close four downtown San Francisco stations during the evening commute, although the transit agency did not shut down cellular service again."

9. While I realize what they are doing is frowned upon
they are not publishing names and addresses and inciting people to go kill the BART cops, unlike a RW website.

But, what they did is get a lot of people using or working for BART to be very angry, and lash out against BART. If BART had 'won', then how soon would it be that cell towers would be interfered with when any protest was planned. These corporations are taking away our rights, and with no push back, they will continue to do so.

At this point, they are the only ones standing between us and total servitude to the corporations.

13. You really don't want them to be the only ones standing in the way between us and servitude to
Edited on Wed Aug-17-11 06:25 PM by Tiggeroshii
...corporations.

Because if they are the only ones, that servitude will come much more quickly than we'd like. These people are acting in a way that is completely looking to de-legitimize the entire law enforcement institution -an institution that is somewhat necessary for peace and order. An institution that, if used appropriately would be the ones(not a group of mindless hackers), who are protecting us from the corporations. People say crime is a symptom of poverty. Wouldn't it follow that police violence would be a symptom of corruption and inequality? I think we should start there before trying to incite further chaos between the haves and have nots.

19. No, I don't want them to be the only ones, but
none of our 'leaders' are doing anything. The poor and the working poor are invisible. They could hold a demonstration with a million people, and if the media doesn't cover it, no one will know it happened. And, if does get reported, the numbers are low, and our 'leaders' shrug it off, especially if it comes from the left, because we have no where else to go. The only thing that gets covered in the media is violence. Would you rather that we fought back with violence?

As far as the names being posted, if you know one thing about someone, you can probably find out a lot more that wasn't disclosed. People are really stupid when it comes to posting things on line. I know a woman who posted pictures of her 2 beautiful young daughters on line, what state they lived in and what school these kids went to. She was really lucky that this was in the early days of the Internet, because any pedophile could have found and kidnapped those girls.

Still waiting........................

So far I don't see their 'talent' doing anything of real value to the country.

16. yes, because i'm sure all 102 officers
were involved in that questionable decision and deserved to be harassed :eyes:

while i applaud the desire to hold the powerful accountable, i'm not sure much puerile vigilantism helps anything. if Anonymous must hack something BART-related, i'd rather see them hack the email system and shed some light as to who SPECIFICALLY in the BART department hold some responsibility for the actions they are upset about.
