Perry holds record on executions: report

Advocates against capital punishment will not find an ally in Rick Perry anytime soon.

The Washington Post has reported that the Texas governor holds the record for most executions ever for a governor, and by a large margin. Perry has presided over 234 executions, increasing Texas' reputation by far as the #1 state in executing people.

George W.Bush reportedly presided over a higher rate of executions than Perry in his five years as governor before becoming President, while Democratic governor Ann Richards had 50 executions in her one term. Thanks to its size and lack of appeals from lower courts, the overall structure of support for the death penalty is a constant in Texas, no matter who is governor.

However, Perry has been even more aggressive in pushing for capital punishment than his predecessors.

3. No. You mean, don't be convicted for capital crime in Texas. And try not to be black when you are.

There's a difference between actually killing someone and being convicted for it. Innocent people have been judicially murdered. People of color are given the death penalty at a higher rate than white people, for the same crimes.

2. Ahh, Perry--the "Greg Stillson" candidate...

Now would be a really good time for a DEAD ZONE feature film reminding of the similarities.... Where are you Stephen King and Michael Anthony Hall?

Smarmy, telegenic, ultra-"religious" candidates scare the shit out of me-- Perry really gives me awful vibes. He most certainly has allowed innocent men to be executed--especially the poor guy convicted of the arson fire that killed his own family. If that isn't the epitome' of evil, I don't know what is.

5. Best thing Perry has going for him: Ability to cause you to fear...

That is precisely what he is aiming for. My suggestion: Don't use the "fear" word around him; he likes that, he capitalizes very effectively on that. Just keep hitting him on his phony macho.
