Chavez: Venezuela recognizes only Gadhafi gov't
Source: AP

AP – 1 hr 14 mins agotweet0Share0EmailPrintCARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Hugo Chavez said Tuesday that Venezuela will continue to recognize Moammar Gadhafi as the leader of Libya and will refuse to recognize a rebel-led interim government.

Chavez spoke as Libyan rebels blasted through the gates of Gadhafi's compound in the Libyan capital of Tripoli after hours of intense fighting. Gadhafi's whereabouts remained unclear.

"We recognize only one government: the one led by Moammar Gadhafi," said Chavez, speaking during a televised address.

He condemned the roles of NATO and the U.S. government in Libya's conflict.

6. And I only recognize Caligula Ceasar as the leader of the Roman Empire.
So basically, we're in the same boat Chavez and I, recognizing governments that no longer exist.

I guess even dictators have their supporters even on DU. It's why so many people dislike the "left" - defending whackos like Chavez and Gaddaffi only makes anti-communists/socialists/anarchist/whatever more fired up.

9. I'll admit that any opinion on Chavez or Qaddafi
would be misinformed by biased and filtered American & UK media and government propaganda. There are so many agendas at play about those guys that nobody knows what the truth is.

10. Poor Chavez...
...losing one of his dictator "brothers" must be difficult for him.

Oh well, he's still got "brothers" Mugabe and Ahmadinejad to lean on in these tough times.

17. Perfectly understandable...
...if you begin with the supposition that Chavez is a moron with a totally fucked up view of reality.

But then any religious fanatic who can continue to praise Marxist/Leninist policies and political thought while they ramble on about "socialist revolution" in the face unambiguous historical evidence that every state, without exception, that has taken that path has produced economic ruin, repression and tyranny, and in some cases even democide (a la Khmer Rouge) is simply divorced from reality, and is, like Chavez, a moron with a totally fucked up view of reality.

15. Hugo ignoring reality? Say it isn't so!
If he keeps his eyes shut really, really tight and puts his fingers in his ears, everything is OK.

18. oh, the hatered....
....in this thread for a fine democratically elected leader of a fine South American country....where's the compassion for a threatened Socialist leader?

....I think we all understand Hugos' love of gadhafi is tempered and conditioned by the unilateral European and US aggression towards a disliked smaller state and leader, mainly for Western corporate interests....

....an aggression that went well beyond the UN sanctions, which many supported for many different reasons, but nonetheless, a situation Hugo may feel he may find himself in one day....

....our nations' love and obsession with cheap oil and capitalism brings us in collision with Socialism and Hugo; he just expressing these self-evident facts....
