Sarajevo US embassy gunman arrested: police
Source: AFP

SARAJEVO — A suspected radical Islamist gunman who opened fire Friday near the US embassy in Sarajevo was wounded and arrested, a police spokesman told Bosnian television.

"The person who fired an automatic weapon was wounded and arrested during the police operation. After receiving medical treatment on the scene the person was hospitalised," police spokesman Irfan Nefic told national BHT television.

Earlier media reports said the man, identified as a member of the Wahhabi branch of Islam, was killed by a sniper after firing a Kalashnikov rifle at the US mission.

Embassy spokeswoman Sanja Pejcinovic would not go into details of the apparent attack.

I have been to Sarajevo, the US embassy is at the end of a long avenue leading in to downtown, right next to the soviet-style train station.

Its sad that this happen, Sarajevo feels like any other eastern european city. You see very few women with headscarves for example, most people are fairly secular.

6. In fact, the center of this sect is in Saud
and bin Laden's spiritual teacher ran the facility. A number of Saud family princes are members, some rather secretly, and even nonmember princes have been caught supporting Wahhabi mosques, training centers, and more with tens of millions of petrodollars. One huge reason why the Saudis were allowed to leave so quickly after 9/11 was because a good number of them were Wahhabists, and support bin Laden and his threats to attack the Great Satan.

AP Exclusive: Bosnia Raids After US Embassy Attack

By AIDA CERKEZ and ALMIR ALIC Associated Press
GORNJA MAOCA, Bosnia-Herzegovina October 29, 2011 (AP)

Special police units raided homes Saturday in a Bosnian village linked to the gunman who fired an automatic weapon at the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo in what authorities called a terrorist attack. The raids came as 17 suspected associates of the shooter, all said to be members of the ultraconservative Wahhabi Muslim sect, were briefly detained in Serbia.

A convoy of police vehicles entered the isolated northern village of Gornja Maoca, known to be inhabited by many Wahhabis, and officers wearing black masks and camouflage uniforms surrounded several houses, according to an Associated Press video. The reporter saw the security forces enter some homes before officers asked him to leave.

The gunman, identified by police as 23-year-old Mevlid Jasarevic, is accused of shooting at the embassy building in Sarajevo for at least 30 minutes Friday, wounding a policeman guarding the facility, before a police sniper immobilized him with a shot in his leg.
