Pentagon angered by military dead photos
Pentagon angered by military dead photos

By RANDALL CHASE
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

DOVER, Del. -- A Web site published dozens of photographs of American war dead arriving at the nation's largest military mortuary, prompting the Pentagon to order an information clampdown Thursday.

The photographs were released last week to First Amendment activist Russ Kick, who had filed a Freedom of Information Act request to receive the images. Air Force officials initially denied the request but decided to release the photos after Kick appealed their decision.

After Kick posted more than 350 photographs on his Web site, the Defense Department barred the further release of the photographs to media outlets.

At a rally in Dover last month, war protesters criticized President Bush for continuing the practice of previous administrations of not allowing the public or media to witness the arrival of remains at the base.

"We need to stop hiding the deaths of our young; we need to be open about their deaths;," said Jane Bright of West Hills, Calif., whose 24-year-old son, Evan Ashcraft, was killed in combat in July.

Imagine how angry the parents of the dead are that their sons are fighting in a war predicated on lies!

29. Pentagon angry about the truth and reality.
You would think that Americans would have learned a lesson after Viet Nam. But many of the same military leaders and civilian dick-heads are still around or their off-spring are. There isn't a war America doesn't like.

32. oh, they "learned lessions" from Vietnam all right
they learned that the more the public knows about the reasons and costs, the less they are willing to support a war

they learned that one well. How much more popular the Vietnam war would've been if, instead of a phony Gulf of Tonkin, they instead sunk a few passenger ships, full of people, right here in our own waterways, in the name of "communism"

5. Chris Matthews just posed an excellent question on Hardball.
Why is a woman who told the truth (the woman who took a single picture of coffins in Kuwait) fired when not one of the people who lied us into this war is fired?

George W. Bush aka The War President brought these troops home all right. Don't censor their return home.

36. I think it's the Pentagon vs the military antagonism
It sounds like the military released the photos. Good for them. The 'fungible' men and women on the ground know the price that's paid for the decisions made by the 'officials' in DC. I imagine there are many in the military that would like to give the big FU to the monkeys running the Pentagon and this is one way to do it.

19. Just one question: WHY is the pentagon so damn angry?
Does the pentagon want the lives of these soldiers to go "unnoticed"?

WTF is their problem?

They want us all to suddenly back-off of honoring these heroes,...every single one of them? And, what about the thousands of injured,...do they want us to pretend like they do not exist, too?

20. Think about it
That was some press release or talking head sying "The Pentagon is angry", maybe it isnt the pentagon, maybe it's shrubbies minions that are pissed. Like i said in my post above, Bush just got Johnsoned. Lyndon Johnson was a big ole flag waver and his popularity was fine until the "Dover test", after our fellow mericans started seeing the flag draped coffins his popularity plummeted leading to...."I will not seek the nomination of my party for President of the United States."

This admistration for one doesnt want us to know the truth about almost everything, but really, this comes down to his popularity, period end of story. It's fing disgusting isnt it? Sneak them in like they were common criminals or some blight just so monkey boys poll numbers dont go down. In my darkest moments when i feel like Kerry will never win, this is just the kind of stuff that gets me so pissed off that i start writing letter to the ediotor and go to meet-ups.

27. If the cause for which these young people died was so just
then why are their remains being brought back to the US in the middle of the night as if what they died for was shameful? THEY are not the crooks or thieves, the BUSH administration and everyone who supported his blood lust for war are the true crooks!

Sad that they are not returned by the light of the day. It is more sad that they died so young.

KSDK channel 5 in St Louis showed clips from a military funeral for a St Louis area soldier who died in Iraq.

28. These deaths cannot be hidden
Compassion is totally lost on this administration- they try to hide these deaths and pretend there is no price for the great new "preemption doctrine"-or "war of choice"-to me this is the unique evil of the Bush administration-to engage in war whose price is woe and sadness like it is a prep school frat party-then to be embarrassed of the fallen? How horrible

38. That's right. War does not cause death. We have "smart weapons". there
are no longer deaths occurring. Sad part is that foolish Americans desperately want to believe this and ultimately DO believe this nonsense. Just like the foolish rationalization that the US does not practice terrorism because we don't deliberately target citizens, even as we bomb entire cities filled to the brim with civilians. What crap!
