Cain campaign considers lawsuit
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) - Herman Cain's presidential campaign said it is considering filing a lawsuit against the news organization Politico, which first reported that two women who worked with him at the National Restaurant Association alleged he sexually harassed them while he headed the group.

"It is being discussed," campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon told CNN Friday. He would not discuss any details on the basis for the possible lawsuit or when a decision might be made.

Cain and his campaign aides have been very critical of Politico's reporting citing the use of anonymous sources and a lack of some details about some of the claims. Cain has vehemently denied committing sexual harassment and said he recalls one settlement with a female employee as part of an employment termination agreement.

Politico stands by its reporting, saying it was extensively reviewed and it is comfortable with what it has published. "We have heard nothing from the Cain campaign. We stand comfortably behind every Politico reporters have written on the topic," executive editor Jim VandeHei said in a statement.

Does Mr. Cain perhaps not know that a Civil Suit doesn't provide testimonial immunity for the plaintiff?

2. one what grounds?
It's not like Politico was making anything up.

Besides I thought conservatives were opposed to fivolous lawsuits.

4. Sue them for what? Reporting the truth?
That's an original thought.

Seriously, it's not like Presidential Candidates haven't dealt with this stuff before. Clinton was smart to just pretty much ignore what they were saying other than a minimal statement to the press. He managed to get elected TWICE.

I've read a rumor where it was possible that Cain himself requested the release of the accusations figuring it was better to clear the air now then to deal with it when the campaign was getting serious. However, if he's thinking of suing then my guess is the leak came from another GOP opponent wanting to knock Cain down a few levels.

5. If Politico reported that two women who worked with Cain "alleged" he harassed them
and it's TRUE that two women who worked with Cain "alleged" he harassed them, then he hasn't got a case anyway.

9. "considering filing"
are the key words here. The reality is no way in hell will Cain ever file such a suit and prove in court what has been reported slanders him. He is drunk with power from Teabaggers that are desperate to prove they are not racists and will float any tactic just to stay in the news.

10. Yeah, that will really work: sue the media for reporting something pertinent to political campaign.
And Cain's campaigning makes him a public figure, so makes it much harder to win such a suit.

And suing the media has seldom been a good PR move.

11. On what grounds?
If this is for slander and/or libel, because he is a public figure, there is a very high threshold in order to prevail in court. This would be a distraction and the media attention to the litigation would keep this thing alive much longer than they want it to be. So this is a veiled threat. They have no grounds and even if they have some basis, the threshold and the media attention this would take as the thing wound through the court system would drag well into next year....

But it is true that some men feel emboldened because of their position, money, etc. to engage in harassment of all types. Then for a politician that is seeking the public's confidence to engage in cover-up and clumsy denials is nothing but laughable.

suit. 0 for 2.
