Authorities: Car strikes 3 at Occupy DC protest

WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia authorities say a car drove through a crowd near an Occupy DC protest and struck three people.

D.C. fire department spokesman Lon Walls said Saturday morning that the three were transported to two area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. He said none was in critical condition but that some injuries were "fairly serious."

Hundreds of protesters affiliated with Occupy DC shut down streets Friday near the city's convention center in downtown Washington.

D.C. Council member Tommy Wells tweeted that the driver was "stopped further up and in custody." He added that police would be checking his blood alcohol content, among other things. Wells said he was conferring with police officials about the incident.

6. This isn't the Oakland driver who hit two people -- this is another one
It's starting to seem like the real antithesis of OWS is not the Tea Parties but conservative road rage.

2. I guess Diane Sawyer will cite this now as evidence that the patience of decent thinking Americans
, who believe in America, is at an end. "Floor it, America" will become her nightly sign off phrase.

5. Wealthy Repigs think they can murder with no consequences.
I expect the RW violence to escalate.

And just like during the 60s, we will take it and retain the moral high ground.

Be strong, people.

10. Police: 3 struck by car at Occupy DC protest in downtown; driver had green light, not cited
Edited on Sat Nov-05-11 05:24 AM by RamboLiberal
District of Columbia police said early Saturday that a driver will not be charged for striking three people taking part in an Occupy DC protest in downtown Washington.

Lt. Christopher Micciche (MITCH’-ih-kay) of the D.C. police said the driver was not cited because he had a green light when his vehicle struck the three on Friday night.

He said witnesses told police that the three pedestrians “either ran toward or jumped in front of the moving vehicle.” He said one pedestrian jumped on the hood of the car. One of them was cited for being in the roadway.

“The protesters were apparently trying to block the roadway,” Micciche said. “It was essentially an accident where three individuals were injured but they were in violation by being in the roadway.”

They are apparently getting conflicting witness statements on fault.

16. Not if the people were standing still in the street
however, if the people were moving (i.e. crossing the street or attempting to stop the car) then it will be hard to prove intent to injure. Jaywalkers are hit and killed/injured daily and most are handled as tragic accidents.

17. this driver really doesn't have an excuse, especially in Dc
where people step out and cross the street against the light every got damb day. You can't get through the district without someone waiting til the light turns green for traffic and they step out in it, trying to cross it.

With this being a daily, even an hourly occurrence, there is no excuse for him hitting anyone.

18. I've been nearly hit in DC in the crosswalk with a green light
It can be a very bad place to be a pedestrian and the cops do nothing about it.

In both cases they have the driver ID, so I am willing to let the process grind forward. Civil suits seem a slam dunk at this time.

19. I live in DC too and find it very dangerous for pedestrians.
I live near a busy intersection where drivers always run the light and cops turn a blind eye. There are too many drivers who think saving a few minutes is more important than someone's safety or life. It is a crime!

20. I gladly no longer live nor frequent DC
And its a bit sad to see in an era where we would like to see less cars that kind of crap continues.

Once a long time ago, I was grazed by a car while I was in the cross walk with a green light. In response I damaged the car hood. My brother hustled me out of there before I did the same to the driver. It had diplomatic plates...nothing would have happened to him if he had run me down and the cops do protect the diplomats, if not the locals.

33. I'm talking about the pedestrian having the red light
and the car had the green light to proceed through the intersection, and yet they stepped out in traffic, trying to cross... and then copping an attitude when you honk the horn at them--and they're in the wrong.

If they've got the green light, I have no issue--they're supposed to cross the street. I'm talking about not only the red light, but the DO NOT WALK sign lit up and glowing in their face.

It's why I hate DC with every fibre of my being.

occupyDC protesters. I know who I believe! Welcome to cops protecting Americans, fascist style. This is definitely not ALL cops but damn, we're seeing WAY too much of this around the country!

And the Oakland PD who gassed and beat up protesters let the H&R driver go? Something smells like a previous plan by some provocateur here.
