GOP senator calls for changing automatic spending cuts

Washington (CNN) -- Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania called Sunday for reconfiguring the automatic spending cuts required by Congress due to last week's failure by the special joint deficit reduction committee to reach a deal.

Toomey, a member of the so-called "super committee," told the ABC program "This Week" that he wanted to change the formula for making $1.2 trillion in budget cuts mandated under legislation passed in August.

The law, which Toomey opposed, said the cuts must be evenly divided between the military and domestic spending. Social Security, Medicaid, food stamps, veterans' benefits and other politically sensitive programs are spared the budget ax.

Toomey expressed the view of conservatives that the required cuts were weighted too heavily toward the military. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, a Democrat, also has warned that the automatic cuts will undermine military capability.

Since we know the pukes will not do anything to help Main Street prior to next year's elections, believing that the Koch brothers and the other uber-wealthy will help them buy the 2012 cycle, I say let them sit in their own stew.

The funny thing is these cuts will not take effect until 2013 so should the pukes take the WH and Senate majority and retain the House, they could make these changes then. Of course I certainly hope if that is the case the Democrats use the threat of filibuster to prevent anything from getting through the Senate.

First of all the military needs to be cut by AT LEAST 50% overall, not just 50% of the $1.2 trillion but the entire military budget needs to be cut in half. We do not need to spend the amount we do on the military. The only reason we do is because both the Democrats and the Republics are bought and paid for by the defense industries.

And as they attempt to make these changes I hope the Dems are recording every one of these appearances so they can be used against the pukes in 2012 - pukes = military industrial complex, dems = main street.

If we do that we save lives, limbs, stop the death and destruction and occupation of those we keep trying to control,we would stop creating endless number of enemies that we will not have to go kill later on.it would also lessen the threat of us being all taken out,and down when our military conflicts get out of hand and involve all the other nuclear power,and us all out in a nuclear meltdown.

The problem is I don't know if american leaders can ever carry on without war or military conflict somewhere over the globe,Check our history from the 1800 and you will see that we are a nation that loves and glorify war and military,and alway have the need for blood lust,and need to be killing someone anywhere for something,and anything.Too bad for Arabs/Muslims, for the last 30 years are so Arabs and Muslims have been our favorite people to kill.
Of all the other leading industrial nations,we are the only ones that have been killing Arabs and Muslims for a while,and we try every way not to end our occupation and leave them and their land alone,feeling that we have a divine right to be on anyones land,anywhere we feel,and stay there as long as we feel like it.All most of them want,os for foreign occupiers to leave therm alone,and as long as we insist in staying in their land and kill them,they will always look for a way to kill americans anyway they can,and so many of us feel that the Arabs have no right to try and get us out of their own land,and feel we should wipe them out if they resist,I hear that many times from the right wing and many israeli supporters

you can't compromise with the Republicans. That is because it is never really a compromise on their part. They agree to it figuring they have the upper hand and will get most if not all of what they want. When it doesn't work out they just turn around and say they don't like the original agreement, do everything they can to undo it, and go right back to doing the same help the rich and screw everybody else act. Look at the Bush tax cuts the Republicans agree to a temporary cut with a definite expiration date. When that date gets here they whine and moan until they get an extension with the tacit agreement that there will be a new expiration date. Then what do they do? They start pushing to make the cuts permanent. Same here, agree to Super Committee figuring they will run roughshod over the Democrats and get lots of social program cuts with little or no revenue and little or no cuts in the military. It doesn't work out that way so they want to now back out of the whole deal.

On the part of Toomey and the Republicans. Last August the choices were clear. Either the Super Committee comes up with at least $1.5 trillion in spending cuts and tax increases or there would be automatic cuts in spending divided 50-50 between defense and non-defense. Toomey is now saying he wants neither. This is bad faith barginning of the highest order. First you agree to something you have no intention of honoring and then blame the other side. This is what skunks do. Like Obama said the other day, there is no easy off-ramp -- which is exactly what Toomey the skunk is pleading for now.
