Bush to visit Pentagon, back Rumsfeld
May 10, 2004, 6:04 AM EDT

WASHINGTON -- Even as new photographic evidence of Iraqi prisoner abuse surfaced yesterday, the Bush administration signaled strong support for its embattled defense secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, suggesting that his job was secure for now. The president is scheduled to meet with officials at the Pentagon today.

After several days of conflicting signals - during which White House officials let it be known that President George W. Bush was unhappy with some aspects of Rumsfeld's handling of the affair, even as Bush expressed public support for him - Vice President Dick Cheney weighed in strongly on Rumsfeld's side.

"Don Rumsfeld is the best secretary of defense the United States has ever had," Cheney said in a statement late Saturday. "People ought to get off his case and let him do his job."

Bush is expected to reiterate his support for Rumsfeld when he visits the Pentagon today for a briefing on the Iraqi conflict and other military matters.

1. Isn't this the first time Bush has visited the Pentagon?
I don't recall him ever going there, not counting post-911 photo-ops at the crash site. I certainly don't remember him ever going there on official business.

8. What do you expect from Bu$h and his Outlaws?
Edited on Mon May-10-04 07:55 AM by DoYouEverWonder
this is how Outlaws react. They hunker down with their arms and ammunition and stick together until the end, when they all get it in the big shotout.

They're all in it together, and they're all going to go down together too.

11. Big mistake if he does
Oh, yeah, the Deserter-in-Chief telling senior, career military officers that they're giving aid and comfort to the enemy if they keep this up.

Boy, this administration really does know how to win hearts and minds. How could we have ever doubted them?

Bush is making a mistake sticking with his Secretary of Defense. The blood is already in the water. If he were worth his weight in dogshit, Rove would have told Bush to cut Rumsfeld loose.

21. First things first.
Rumsfeld is wounded politically. Let's take him down while we can. That, in itself, will be egg on Bush's face in the runup to November.

16. the magic of polling
Bush didn't know if Rumsfeld should be held accountable for the torture, but the 70% number told him to back him up big time.

18. AP- President praises Rumsfeld in meeting at Pentagon
President Bush issued a strong endorsement of embattled Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld on Monday, telling him after a meeting at the Pentagon, "You are doing a superb job."

With Rumsfeld at his side, Bush said his Cabinet officer was "courageously leading our nation in our war against terror...You are a strong secretary of defense and our nation owes you a debt of gratitude."

~snip~
Bush's voice was still a little hoarse from three days of barnstorming last week by bus. The president ignored a question of whether more images should be released.

Also attending the war council session were Secretary of State Colin Powell; CIA Director George Tenet; Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs; and Gen. John Abizaid, top commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East.

20. This is great news about Rumsfeld*
Notice I have granted Mr. Rumsfeld is own asterisk.

To me, this implies, *) "Rumsfeld, who has been widely criticized for his condcuct of the war and the prisoner abuse scandal."

I say let's keep Rumsfield* in the public eye as long as possible.
