Last Spanish Troops Have Left Iraq Base


MADRID (Reuters) - The last Spanish troops have left their base in Diwaniya, southern Iraq (news - web sites), and are in the process of leaving the country, a Defense Ministry spokesman said on Friday.

"It is correct that they have left the base in Diwaniya, the only remaining Spanish base in Iraq. They are on their way out of the country," the spokesman said.


He declined to give any further details, saying the withdrawal was still going on.


State radio said within a few hours no Spanish soldiers would be left in Iraq.


"The last and only Spaniard in Diwaniya is this correspondent," state radio's correspondent said.
