The Crown Prosecution Service is set to consider whether a British soldier should face criminal charges following the alleged killing of an Iraqi civilian.

In a statement the office of the Attorney General Lord Goldsmith said he had referred the case to the CPS for its views on whether charges should be brought.

The soldier formerly served in Iraq and the case concerns the death of an Iraqi during the course of an arrest.

No further details were forthcoming from the Attorney General's office, or the Ministry of Defence.
