Washington Post-ABC News Poll

Bush Losing Support on Iraq, Poll Finds President's Approval Ratings Hits Lowest Point

By Dan Balz and Richard Morin

Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, May 24, 2004; 5:16 PM

-snip-

Democrats continue to give Bush low marks across the board, but his political standing has been weakened by an erosion in support among independents and by signs of potential disaffection among his typically rock-solid Republican base.

A month ago Bush's overall approval rating stood at 51-47 percent and virtually all of the decline since then is attributable to a drop of 7 percentage points among Republicans. Just 20 percent of Democrats and 46 percent of independents approve of how he is handling the presidency.

On Iraq, a majority of Democrats (87 percent) and independents (58 percent) give him negative marks. Among members of his own party, support, while strong, declined 8 percentage points during the past month to 76 percent.

The president received higher marks for managing the war on terrorism, although the 58 percent approval rating in the latest poll marked the first time Bush has dropped below 60 percent on that question since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Bush's Iraqi approval rating now stands lower than his economic approval rating. In the latest poll, 44 percent said they approved of how he has handled the economy compared with 54 percent who disapproved. The last two employment reports have shown significant new job creation, and while Bush's economic ratings remain negative, they are not as low as they were in March.

(Note to Mod: This is a BRAND NEW poll from WP:ABCNEWS ..... it is NOT the same poll as the CBSNEWS poll, OR the newsweek poll ..)

(Note to Mod: Feel free to PM me and explain WHY all polls, no matter the source, must be discussed in one thread)

1. What's the overall approval number?
Edited on Mon May-24-04 05:10 PM by bluestateguy
I can't get the Washington Post in my computer because of an apparently unfixable cookie problem. Many others here have the same problem.

My exact thought when I saw it, too. That shape is very fractal, isn't it?

edit: if human behavior resolves itself into a fractal shape in a poll, what does that say about humanity as a whole?

4. 47% according to this poll
Bush's overall approval rating declined to 47 percent, the lowest the Post-ABC News polls have recorded since he took office, with 50 percent saying they disapprove. Just four in 10 Americans gave the president positive marks for his handling of Iraq, the lowest since he launched the conflict in March 2003.

people have had an unvarnished input into the mass media and it is wreaking havoc on the corporate controlled press. The mainstream press is not able to pump out their propoganda so easily out of fear of being exposed for the liars they are. DU really exposes the Bullshit of the mass media through dissection of articles and issues through a dialogue between members.

There has never been anything like it IMO.

19. I think that's wishful thinking
After all - we had the same access to this unvarnished news from independent sources on 9/12 and etc. I think it has more to do with the generation of mass fear and hysteria. the press - along with the rest of us - get mesmerized by the snake. Most DUers - because they pay close attention and have a framework and lens through which to make sense of events - tend to be less susceptible to the fear-mongering and the lies designed to keep us all in thral to our masters.

5. Okay. I'll let this post stand.
Or I'll even unlock your previous thread and remove this current one. Let me know.

We just don't want five or six threads about bush poll numbers floating all over page 1 of LBN. Technically, there's not much difference between the discussion in one thread about one poll and another thread about a very similar poll with similar results. It's not that much "newer" than the the CBS poll. But if you wish to have separate threads then we'll go for it.

8. Personally, I like threads on the different polls...
that way we can discuss the merits of each. I know most people don't belive Gallup or Rassmussen polls, but might find CBS or PEW polls more reliable. It's educational to see each and how each is trending.

As long as they're all going in the negative direction I'm happy! (just wish they didn't have to drag the country with them)

10. "...Approval ratings hi-"
Yeah, that confused me for a moment as well. From the looks of this graph, the only thing at this point that can turn shrub's approval numbers around is either some sort of major military accomplishment (I keep wondering if Rove is trying to figure out the best date to announce that OBL has been captured), or else another 9/11 scale terrorist attack.

I just hope neither one happens between now and November...

and it's tied at 46 with Nader. Last month, Bush led Kerry by 5 with Nader included.

12. For the record both Gallup
and WaPo tend to trend high... Quinipac is really low.

What we are seeing is ALL OF THEM ARE TRENDING DOWN, and are
trending DOWN and have been for months.

Now the question is, will boy george go into the 30s territory?

13. Keep in mind that WaPo/ABC polls run about 5 points higher
than most others, so if he's at 47 percent here, his real numbers are in the low 40s (see CBS poll). And Kerry has gone from 5 points down (with Nader) to a tie in this poll. That's a nice one-month improvement.

18. Still, they push this lie-
"The president received higher marks for managing the war on terrorism"

Like, why would anyone believe that?

(1) No OBL.
(2) $200BB and 800+ American lives lost NOT fighting the terrorists.
(3) His policies have radicalized the ME and will make the world less secure from random acts of terrorism.
(4) Not going after the financial institutions that finance terrorists. Probably because he's compromised on that issue.
(5) Outing CIA agents charged with tracking terrorists who may be in the market for WMD.
(6) Clueless and unprepared to stop 9/11.

I'd love to find the people that think he is somehow doing anything right with regards to terror. From my perspective, this issue couldn't have been handled more incompetently even if they had willfully tried to frig it up.

24. As the corporate
media whores wipe the tears from their eyes. Reality has a way of making itself known despite the enormous propping up of our illegal regime by the propaganda arm of the extreme right, formerly known as the free press. Wonder how much this has to do with the sudden "willingness" to report negative stories about our "beloved leader"?

27. When ABC/WP Has Him At These Numbers, He's In Deep Shit
Edited on Tue May-25-04 10:32 AM by Beetwasher
Every poll now has his dissaprovals higher than his approvals (I think).

The majority of people in this country are now looking at this admin. with a critical eye. It's incredibly difficult to use propoganda to turn his numbers around in a an overtly critical environment, and propoganda is all they have.
