Nile Basin countries discuss water laws
Entebbe, Uganda

Ten African countries sharing the River Nile met on Monday in Uganda to discuss a legal framework that will replace colonial laws which give Egypt a preferential use of the river's resources, officials said.

"We have started the meeting and all countries are represented by officials, who are trying to come up with a legal and institutional cooperation framework that will be the basis for usage of River Nile waters," Ugandan Water commissioner Ssenfuma Nsubuga said.

"Negotiations are not easy. It might take a year, but we know that we are on the right course," Ugandan Water Minister Mary Mutagamba also said by telephone, pointing out: "It is the third meeting in the framework process that started in Addis Ababa last September."

I think this is LBN because I believe fresh water will become a terrible issue in the near future.

1. Water already IS a terrible issue...in the present....
Edited on Mon May-31-04 10:34 AM by kalian
Just look at what the Israelis have done with the Palestinians'
water... Iran and Iraq also fought over major fresh water supplies
during their decade long "war".

And remember one more thing: as oil becomes more expensive, so will
water purification treatment...since water treatment is DEPENDENT on
CHEAP energy...

Believe me...mankind is headed towards a VERY nasty situation within
the next 10 years.

2. agree - we should be making plans and carrying them out

concerning oil and water

it should be the world's primary concern

how to get off of oil

and how to keep clean and distribute water to everyone

bottom line is the world's food supply which right now needs oil and water. we have to get oil out of the picture before it's too late. some say it is already too late.
