Americans cashing in on mad cow: MLA

EDMONTON - New Democrat MLA Brian Mason says American-owned meat packers are cashing in on Alberta's mad cow crisis.

He says while cattle prices are falling, meat packers are profiting. The report states that decreasing income in the U.S. plants was offset by profits at the Lakeside operation in Canada.

"The Conservative government has a responsibility to protect Alberta cattle producers but have preferred to twiddle their thumbs and wait for the border to open," he says.
