``The death of the soldiers in Iraq was not a result of mistakes made during demining work -- it was a mortar attack,'' said General Piotr Czerwinski at a Baghdad press conference broadcast on Polish private television station TVN24.
Officials from the U.S.-led coalition had originally said the deaths at as-Suwayrah, south of Baghdad, were probably due to an accident during engineering work at an ammunition and explosives storage area.
Three Slovak soldiers and one Latvian died in the attack, the first casualties from those countries in Iraq. Two Poles also died, bringing the total number of Polish military deaths to six.
