Poll suggests public has grown weary of politicians talking religion
BY JIM REMSEN
Knight Ridder Newspapers

PHILADELPHIA - (KRT) - In an election season suffused with religious references, a nationwide poll released Tuesday found that while most respondents say "moral values" are important to their vote, many have grown tired of politicians' talk of faith and prayer.

The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press said its finding "marks a clear shift" in sentiment from a year ago. Whereas 41 percent of respondents in 2003 said politicians discussed their faith too little, only 31 percent felt that way in the latest survey - and the number who said there was too much rose from 21 percent to 27 percent.

The shift was most pronounced among white Catholics, whose votes are being fiercely courted by the Bush and Kerry campaigns. Thirty-seven percent of Catholics surveyed a year ago found too little faith talk, but that figure has since fallen to 16 percent, while those who said there was too much rose from 20 percent then to 30 percent today.

Criticism of President Bush, a born-again Christian, accounts for most of the drop-off, survey officials said. Those who felt Bush mentioned his faith the right amount fell from 62 percent in a July 2003 poll to 53 percent now, while those who said he discussed it too much rose from 14 percent to 24 percent.

Those who are true born-again Christians that UNDERSTANDS the facts and not espouses religion, 1%.

I was APPALLED when I found out one of the Baldwin brothers (Stephen Baldwin) is a born-again Christian and will vote for *.

7. Not so fast
One of the prime activists in my environmental group is born-again. She has the right idea about Bush.

I think that we make the mistake of lumping all evangelicals in with the fundamentalists, who are really quite a fright. Don't forget that one of the major protestant sects is the Black church. (Don't ask me to name the group, I am a skeptic.)

5. What am I most sick of? That GD "What would Jesus Do?" bracelet
Can they figure it out? Can we just agree that if we knew the answer to that one we probably wouldn't even be around? Or that we wouldn't have half the problems we now have?

That is as bad as the Smiliey faces and the I Heart NY.

11. I am so tired of *Co using Gawd
as a podium for his lack of spirituality that I could :puke:

and I believe that the line of separation from church and state has been crossed and blurred so badly that it will take years to get our world back in order.
