Black Delegates Question Republican Support
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Republican Party hopes to woo black voters who overwhelmingly declined the invitation to support George W. Bush in 2000.

But this week at the Republican National Convention, black delegates say they worry the party isn't putting its money where its mouth is.

"The Republican Party has been its own worst enemy in the black community," said John Crittenden Jr., a Baptist minister and Kentucky delegate. "They don't come to our community. They think the Democrats have it locked up."

Crittenden and other delegates seeking support for outreach efforts aimed at the black community voiced skepticism over the reception they are getting at the convention to nominate Bush for a second term as president.

1. Why am I reminded of a scene from National Lampoon's 'Animal House?'
You know the one at the rush party, where all the 'losers' and unwanted people were ushered into the same room and isolated?

"Black republicans, I'd like you to me the Log Cabin Republicans. Have a good time and make lots of noise. See you boys in four years..."

19. It's taken me a year and a half to rack up these 345 posts.
I don't see how all you 1000+ posters do it. How do you have time to read the news stories and articles here (and presumable other sources as well), then make all of these posts? And some of you guys 'n gals don't have little one line posts. More like a mini dissertation.

You people rock!

6. Why are they there?
I guess they are hoping to change the Republican Party from within?

Wouldn't it be more effective to try to change the Democratic Party from within? I mean, the Democratic Party actually supports rights for all people. I understand why some African Americans might feel that the Democrats haven't done enough, but why do they think the Republicans will help them?

Truly baffled here.

7. Uncle Toms
I'm black so I can say this. These black delegates are nothing more than Uncle (Clarence) Tom's who profit richly off of their self-hatred.

See if you've got a few well-placed blacks carrying your water, much easier to oppress them b/c you can always say, see (Clarence Thomas/Colin Powell/Condi Rice/Alan Keyes/Armstrong Williams) doesn't think it's a big deal, why should you?

Very effective, been working quite well for about 400 years.

8. As a man of color...I fully agree with you on the opportunists
who call themselves "republican', and it's not only Black folks...latinos historically ignored by that party, especially in the southwest are also carrying George Bush's water.

9. You got that right!

Our brothers and sisters are being used by the Master.

How they can believe that the Republican party cares about them is just beyond imagination.

If they had guts they would walk out of MSG and get to the Press immediately. I am sure that if they called Charles Rangel's office he would meet them in front of the cameras. They need to spill the beans on all the dirty tricks that they may have heard about in the kitchen. Then fill out a new voter registration card as a registered Democrat.

As far as I know, the only Uncle Tom they are bringing out at the convention is Uncle Donald King. And as far as I know, he is a has been.

Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 05:44 PM by khephra
He's there trying to get support. I don't know if he's going to be put forward by the party, though.
