Centrist Christie Whitman a GOP Outsider Looking In
Centrist Christie Whitman a GOP Outsider Looking In

BY ROBERT COHEN
c.2004 Newhouse News Service

A little more than a year after she ended a tempestuous stint as a member of the Bush administration, former New Jersey Gov. Christie Whitman is taking an active role during this week's Republican National Convention, preaching the gospel of social moderation.

A centrist in a Republican Party dominated by conservatives, Whitman is appearing nightly as a commentator on national and New York television shows, giving a series of speeches and on Monday participated in a forum with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich arguing the GOP's future depends on being inclusive and open-minded.

"It's my party too, and it's worth fighting for and I will continue to do that," said Whitman, who went back to her New Jersey farm in June 2003 after serving as head of the Environmental Protection Agency for 21/2 years.

Whitman said she was not invited to speak before any conservative groups during the convention and will not be on the podium addressing the GOP gathering. But Whitman, who served as New Jersey governor from 1994 to 2001, said she will tell her largely moderate audiences in New York: "Don't give up. We are in the right place. Let's keep fighting."

Even though she is a tool, unlsitened to and uncared about. Used like a piece of toilet paper by her Bushevik masters, yet she keeps coming back for more.

Imperial Amerika 2004 is quite the parade of villains, scoundrels, and bootlickers, isn't it?

3. Memo to Christie:
Move on. You are a failed governoretta, a failed cabinet member and just a sad case. You have no center, no core beliefs, other than who, amongst your social "equals", you can make richer.

Please, In The Name of God, retire to Oldwick, drink Martinis until you are pie-eyed for lunch and dinner at Tewksbury Inn and go to the matinees on Broadway every Wednesday.

It truly will be the high point of your public service career if you do that. Leave the rest of us to clean up the mess you left behind, when you did a runner. Leave us in peace.

4. What is more pathetic
than a so-called moderate republican with its nose pressed against the glass watching the party going on inside but not allowed to join in. So sad.

6. Whitless of Florida recount fame?
Christy offered her body for a photo op along with Pataki to help intimidate vote counters in Florida.
She can go to hell.

8. Self-hating repub women to the back of the line please.
I'd just love to know how these moderates voting for chimpy will advance their agenda? If they truly want the PNACer's and the god squad out of the gop their best bet would be to let the party implode.
