The Pentagon pays many of Saddam Hussein’s former generals and colonels hundreds of dollars a month in order to advise the U.S. and Iraqi officials on how to end the violence in northern Iraq.
The mission was first installed three months ago in Baquba by Colonel Dana Pittard.
The U.S. military says that Saddam's former generals are operating as U.S. consultants in an attempt to contain the violence in the provinces of Salahuddin, Tamim, Sulaimaniya and Diyala.
The Iraqi generals offer operational tips, advice on the finer points of security and the benefits and equipment of Iraqi police and national guardsmen. Many also use their links with Iraqi rebels to convince them to abandon their arms.
