Dean Sucks Up to Cuban Americans, Flip Flops on Embargo
Democratic contender Dean alters Cuba stand
On easing the embargo: 'Can't do it right now'

BY PETER WALLSTEN

SPOKANE, Wash. - As he surges to the top of the race for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination and begins to think about a potential contest against President Bush, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean says he is shifting his views on the trade embargo with Cuba.

Speaking to reporters during a four-day national campaign swing, Dean said he supports rolling back the embargo in order to encourage human-rights advancements -- but citing Fidel Castro's recent crackdowns on dissidents, says that in recent months he has become convinced that ``we can't do it right now.''

. . .

''If you would have asked me six months ago, I would have said we should begin to ease the embargo in return for human-rights concessions,'' he said, responding to a question from a Herald reporter at a dinner Sunday night in Seattle. ``But you can't do it now because Castro has just locked up a huge number of human-rights activists and put them in prison and show trials. You can't reward that kind of behavior if what you want to do is link human-rights behavior with foreign trade.''

. . . .

No doubt the Dean supporters around here who have trashed Lieberman mercifully for supporting the embargo and opposing Castro will find some way to rationalize their annointed candidate's change of heart.

6. Tell that to the Lieberman bashers
They never feel constrained to use the real headline.

Typical Dean supporter -- can dish it out, but cannot take it.

4. Gov. Dean, Mr. Dolstein
Seems to be growing ever more serious about winning an election.

My own preferred candidate is Sen. C\Kerry, but Gov. Dean does show a combativeness that is a useful asset in persuading the elctorate.

5. Dupe
Dupe.

I disagree with Dean's change of heart, but only because i think that the embargo is doing nothing. Cuba will continue on course until Castro dies. His grip on power is too absolute.

15. So Dean is changing his mind because Castro cracked down recently
on dissidents. What's wrong with that?

What it tells me is that Dean is keeping to his trait that he will evaluate policy based upon evidence, not ideology.

Castro put dissidents in jail and violated human rights recently. A year ago, things were different. Times change, events change, people change. That's a fact of life.

Lieberman's problems are mainly derived from his personality traits. He just doesn't have the right stuff to be President. He is fit to be in a supporting role, not a leadership one.
