A big increase of voters in swing states (NYTimes)

....

We know it's going on, and it's a very encouraging sign," said Steve Elmendorf, deputy campaign manager for Senator John Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee. The new voters, Mr. Elmendorf said, "could very much be the difference."

A spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, Christine Iverson, declined to comment on The Times's findings and said she did not believe Republicans were lagging in the registration battle. "We're very confident that we have a ground game that's as good as the Democrats', and better," she said.

1. That's encouraging! I wish Indiana was as important.
I've only registered 11 so far but I just started about 2 weeks ago and I've only walked about half my precinct.

2. New headline--and slightly more accurate!
NYTimes originally ran this story with the head: "Both Parties See Big Increase in Swing States".
Not true, of course. Dems outregistering Pukes ten to one in Ohio, five to one in Florida.
I saw it posted with the old headline somewhere here tonight. Good grief!

5. Notice they still don't cede momentum or advantage to the Dems!
If it were the Republicans who were ahead, what do you suppose the headline would be?

12. I've just accepted that the media REFUSES to write postively about Kerry!
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040926/ap_on_el_pr/campaign_midwest_9

This was on the Yahoo front page.. from AP (ANOTHER PRESS RELEASE FROM THE GOP turned into an article: Notice the url "pr". This one is about Kerry doing badly in the Midwest.. and Bush doing well.. I found another article the other day from AP with the "pr".. and mentioned here that I suspected it was a RNC press release. Someone here on DU, fairly new, mentioned that they actually received that as a press release the day before from the RNC. So.. more fucking RNC cheerleading disguised as a news story! (always look at the url)

7. The morons.
If republicans were ahead, their head would be Republicans massacre Democrats on registration of new voters. Have they no shame?

3. If you still need a reason to get off your ass and phone bank/precinct...
walk, it's in this article:

Studies have shown that calling voters and showing up at their houses before and on Election Day substantially increases turnout - and is cheaper per vote than buying a television advertisement. Republicans used the strategy with great success in the 2002 elections.

6. This is only one reason why all the polls are skewed this election.
Although some polls may have Bu$h ahead, these polls don't accurately reflect the opinions of the overall voting populace.

Also, many folks age 18-29 don't get polled because of their economic circumstances, and these folks have also been registering in record numbers.

This is great because, voters in this age group are twice as likely to vote for Kerry as they are Bu$h, and this age group now makes up between 1 in 5 and 1 in 6 of registered voters.

Bu$h cannot win in November unless he steals the election.

8. Good news
We are gonna win because of all these new dem voters. All Kerry has to do is break even or even win the debate (which I think he will) and it's all over for Chimpy.

10. More good news maybe?
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 12:17 PM by Roy
We know that a great majority of these new voters are dem leaners, first time or seldom voters or folks who just hate or fear George Bush.

What's never talked about with the new influx of new voters, is maybe a hidden benefit, that these are probably not news junkies who are paying attention except for maybe an issue directly related to them.

Since they won't be following the down ballot races, would they most likely vote a straight dem ticket, maybe out of convenience or whatever?

My wife and many family members always ask me, after the president, how they should vote on other issues on the ballot.
