Crowd cheers after Heinz Kerry rebuts heckler
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 08:46 AM by JI7
what a contrast from Laura Bush who had a woman arrested for wanting to know why her son died in a war Laura's husband started. and that woman deserved a response much more than this idiot heckler at Teresa's rally.

<During a question and answer session, a young man demanded to know why Kerry voted to give Bush authority to attack Iraq but voted against an $87 billion appropriation bill to support the war effort there.

Heinz Kerry sharply asked the man whether he had read the legislation that was voted on.

When he said no, she told him that Kerry had supported $60 billion in military appropriations for Iraq, but would not vote for the full $87 billion because he considered it a "blank check." Kerry was one of 11 Democrats to vote against the bill.

"And we knew they'd already given Haliburton millions in no-bid contracts," she snapped, referring to the company formerly led by Vice President Dick Cheney.

The young man responsed with chanting "Four more years!" as he walked out of the auditorium. The partisan crowd's cheer of "Six more weeks!" quickly drowned him out.

"The way we live in peace in a family, in a marriage, in the world, is not by threatening people, is not by showing off your muscles. It's by listening, by giving a hand sometimes, by being intelligent, by being open and by setting high standards," she said at the CSU rally. "There are about 50 countries in the world that have the capability to build nuclear weapons. Are we going to attack them all?" she said. >

I love this "There are about 50 countries in the world that have the capability to build nuclear weapons. Are we going to attack them all?" she said. >

This should be repeated over and over and over by the Kerry camp.

Folks, the repugs tried, and failed, to get a tit-for-tat for the woman arrested at Laura's speech. We are different, spread the news!

on edit: OK, I emailed the WH with this...

Lets see...At republican speeches/rallys hecklers get kicked, knocked to the ground, mouths slapped, hair pulled, hand-cuffed (dead soldier's mom!) and arrested.
At Democratic speech/rally you, excuse me?, get a response and your question answered.
Does God know about this?

6. That was terrific, and I hope THIS gets into the media as much as
her "shove it" comment did! This is the way campaigns should be handled. Speakers should be exposed to a heckler once in a while, and how they handle them is verry telling!

To have people forbidden entrance, forced to sign commitments of support, or thrown out and arrested is the real un-American actions!!!

They honestly believe they've started some "Thousand Year Reich" of PNAC puppets and Neo-Con prinicpals. Rumsferatu, Cheney, Scooter Libby, the whole bunch.

I don't think they've published ALL their plans, just the one calling for "Pax Amerikanner" to spread from the Middle-East like an oil slick...
But I must confess that particular document scared me so much i didn't dig a lot further into it...

21. The fact that the heckler walked out and blurted "four more years"
is proof he only has rhetoric to use and very little background knowledge on the issues. I think this is typical of many of the Kerry hecklers. Teresa did the right thing. Hold his feet to the fire and make him explain and answer his rhetoric. Then, they're exposed.

There's a talk show host in Lima, Ohio who uses this tactic. Almost daily he gets callers who try to give him hell for his criticism of Bush, using the standard catch phrases and cliches you hear Bush and Cheney use. When the host asks the caller to give him examples of the liberal media, or Kerry flip-flopping, or whatever, they avoid answering his question and try to continue blurting out their pre-rehearsed lines. When it's obvious the callers have no intention to answer the host's questions, they get cut off.

That seems to be the most effective way of handling these kinds of people.

15. Typical repub
When confronted with the facts and a clear rebuttal of their talking points, they revert to the brainless "4 more year" mantra. Essentially, they are saying they have nothing to really arm themselves other than their stupid-ass chant because they have no knowledge on their side.

That said, how long before someone on the right starts claiming that heckler was a plant?

30. Why would they claim that?
They don't have the goddamned sense to be embarrassed about how she handled the guy. That's exactly what they want their lackeys to do. They don't care if there's a rebuttal -- they just want to draw attention away from her, and get it focused on their slime for a few minutes.

It reminds me of when you're watching a news report about a fire or an auto accidnet somewhere, and the reporter's talking to a witness ... and in the background, you see this teenager making rabbit ears over somebody's head, or shouting 'hi, Mom!' -- he made his point, he disrupted the news report. He had nothing of value to add, but he got attention. That's all they can hope to do, since they can't actually argue, just spew talking points. The whole purpose is to disrupt, not to actually hold dialogue, because they don't hold up under dialogue and they damned well know it.

50. OT--but I have to say it.
I have for some time been annoyed by the fact that Americans are always doing what you call "making rabbit ears" in jest. Even the popular commic strip "Fox Trot" (which I love, BTW) has that image on its sunday strip, with, if I remember correctly, the dad making the "ears" over his wife's head.

Now, this is ridiculous, because those are not "rabbit ears." What they are is cuckold's horns! To make that sign is to say that the person (it is supposed to be a man, not a woman, that the sign is made at) is being betrayed by his wife, who is sleeping with another man (or more than one other man, in some cases).

The degree to which Americans are ignorant of the sign's meaning is evidenced by the fact that in the comic strip Roger Fox is shown making the sign over his own wife's head!

Elizabeth Edwards seems pretty great, too. I read an early (August?) interview with the 2 of them in Time or Newsweek; it was mostly a puff piece, but they were both so articulate and opinionated and unafraid.

39. Let's hope...
...she doesn't get the same treatment Hillary did when she got into the White House. For whatever reason, many people in this country are just blasted scared of intelligent, active women. I think most people's reasons for hating Hillary were simply that she was a First Lady who wanted to do more than just act as a mouthpiece for the President (see Laura Bush), and the Repubs can't handle that. Looks like the backlash against feminism will not go away. I like Teresa's approach: when attacked, attack back intelligently and passionately.

It tells me just as much about John Kerry as it does about Teresa herself. Kerry is clearly one of those men secure enough in his own humanity, intellect, character, and achievement - that he can love and marry and partner with a woman as illustrious, accomplished, and magnificent as Teresa. Clinton struck me that way, too. You don't see many republi-CONS in that boat, do ya?

40. There is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL photograph of Teresa
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 01:04 PM by gauguin57
in this past week's New Yorker magazine. I can't describe it ... you just have to see it. It's at the beginning of a long (and very interesting profile) of her.

One detail I loved ... when John and Teresa first met up again (after her husband had died and he was divorced), they first went to Mass together. Then, they hung out, starting out speaking English to one another but then lapsing into French (which the writer said is usually a sign -- when you're talkinga bout two Americans -- that they're flirting). Teresa's son, Andre, is also "a polyglot like his mother."

Man. There's just no comparison between the Crawford Hillbillies and the Heinz/Kerry families.

On edit: Here's the New Yorker profile (alas, without the photo).

48. What a major contrast to Laura
Laura would NEVER have the ability to do what Teresa did.....and I want to know how she can face herself in the mirror knowing how much destruction her husband has caused?

49. that's the way to handle these thugs. they send out their hoodlums with
half-@ssed ideas in their heads... straigten them out publicly, using the facts. make them eat their words. send them home with their tails between their legs.

i love that the guy walked out when he couldn't argue anymore, falling back, giving up ground, chanting to console himself (like whistling in the dark).

DEMORALIZE 'EM! they're idiots for ever believing anything rove shoved down their throats. they're idiots for ever trusting bush's campaign buffoonery and bluster.

Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 04:29 PM by 0rganism
What, no plastic handcuffs? No jackbooted escort? No cops waiting to haul his ass to jail waiting outside the doors? No thugs ready to stomp his ass into the floor? No "young Democrats" ready to kick him in the groin while he's restrained by a secret service detail? My goodness, it's almost like he lives in a civilized society which tolerates dissent! Whatever will they think of next?

61. People who support * and love Pickles
will never, ever be swayed or find anything to like about a smart, attractive woman like a Theresa or a Hillary. And when you dig deeply into that pile of Freudian manure, you will start to turn up a lot of not so pleasant facts about male dominated society in general.

It seems so weird to say this, but fundie Muslims have so much more in common with fundie Christians than they realize.

76. The three desert religions share many of the same foundations.
I'm speaking of course, of christianity, islam and judaism. All three have Abrahamic roots. Unfortunately they also share most of the same bad qualities.

67. Great article on Laura and Terresa in GQ
I don't normally read this mag, in fact it was a first for me but someone left it on the Bart train I was on. Some one did a great story on the two women. It really shows how much Kerry loves her and how proud he is of her and how Laura has no personality, trying to hard to be perfect and happy at her achievements at it. They said Laura has 74% approval rating, does that mean dems like her to? They haven't asked me. I think she is a phony and I don't like phonies, that goes for anyone with me not just politics. I don't hate Laura but I don't respect anyone that can't be truthful about themselves.

74. I love people with class who have guts to speak out with class.
Love her. Fresh truth. Fresh depth of character. Love the contrast.

Seems we can say that about John Edwards wife, also.

Only six weeks to go. The first thing she will have to deal with is getting the Bush stench out of the whitehouse.
