(OH)Officials Warned Not to Defy Ballot Order (SoS Blackwell at it again!)

Officials warned not to defy ballot order
Wednesday, October 06, 2004
Mark Niquette
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The battle over who gets to vote in Ohio escalated yesterday, even as Democrats and Republicans said they’re recruiting thousands of lawyers here and in other key states to monitor voting Nov. 2 for potential problems.

Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell yesterday warned county boards of elections’ officials to obey his directive regarding provisional voting or face removal from office, after some said they would disregard it.

Blackwell sent a warning letter to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections — with copies to all other county elections boards — reminding them they may only issue provisional ballots to voters in the precinct where the voters live, unless a court rules otherwise.
<snip>

In other words, if the Boards of Election screw up and inform a new voter to show up at the wrong precinct...a situation which, regrettably, is already happening with some frequency...that voter will not be given a provisional ballot. The fact that federal law ...HAVA... requires provisional ballots seem to be lost on Mr Blackwell.

The democrats have filed suit, but Blackwell's trying to run out the clock. Email your comments to:

election@sos.state.oh.us

Or give Mr Blackwell a toll free call at:

General Telephone Number (Toll Free): 1-877-767-6446

He is a traitor, loyal only to the Bush family.

if they convince eveyone to watch ohio, that means fewer eyes will be on them elsewhere.

9. I got through on the phone line
I expressed my opinion and then I was forwarded to someone's voice mail and I left a message there.

That's what I did when Blackwell said that he would consider registrations forms APPLICATIONS and not registrations if they were not on cardboard thick paper. All of the publicity caused Blackwell to back off that attempt to suppress voter registrations.

I hope that my phone call today will help make him change his mind on this issue as well.

11. An ACLU flyer told me the same thing (WA State)
It said a provisional ballot would only be valid in the precinct where you actually are supposed to be registered. Not finding yourself on the rolls in the precinct where you believe you're registered would BE one of the problems! It's so screwed up. NO ONE is in CHARGE.

Karl Rove is in charge. This is a coordinated effort do disenfranchise
as many Democratic voters as possible.

12. sent an email and called ... (line busy) I hope we get enough
people to cause a stir here. I wish Blackwell was in my town. I would have crushed him enough wherein he would think of resignation.

I can't believe the people put up with this Asshole.

22. Betty Montgomery and Jim Petro are laughing their ASSES off
The Republican primary for governor next year is going to be BLOODY as hell, with those two and Blackwell running (which he will do)

My theory is that since the governor's primary race was going to be a LESSON in dirty politics and bloodbaths, that Blackwell has either:

1. Taken it upon himself to deliver Ohio to *, hoping the BFEE will reward him

2. Been promised reward from the BFEE if he would DO this for them

It's one or the other folks...seriously, I would bet my right hand on it.

20. FULTON CO. RESPONSE!!! PLEASE READ!!!!
Ohio is not Florida, our elections laws are not anything like FL.
There are many reasons a voter needs to vote in his own precinct. Our pollworkers are directed to instruct the voter where to go to vote in their own precinct or at the Board of Elections.
Voters need to vote in their precincts because everything is geared for a precinct count in our machines, they vote on issues and candidates unique to their precincts and the voting location for their precinct is the closest one to their homes. Why would they want to go across the county to vote when they can vote in their own back yards??
The main thing is the voter is given every opportunity to vote.
Thank you for your concerns.

"No, we cannot according to state law & HAVA. They will be instructed where to go to vote in their right precinct. Would you want someone to vote on issues that would affect you and not them??"

Someone needs to explain the law to this woman. THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS THERE IS SUCH A THING AS PROVISIONAL BALLOTS!!!

She flunks reading comprehension.

26. FULTON CO. is supressing the vote RESPONSE #3
HAVA says we have to provide provisional ballots according to your state
laws and our state laws provide for provisional voting and provisional
voting is for people who have moved within the 30 days prior to elections
that were registered in their old precinct/county, not just for
presidential, but for all the candidates and issues. There is nothing set
up for just presidential voting at the precincts and no law providing for
that so a voter would be able to vote on everything that is on the ballot
for a precinct that he is voting in. So, like I said before, would you want
someone to come into your precinct and vote on your issues that would not
affect him/her??
It is a practicality issue, we are doing everything we can through our
office to give the voter a chance to vote. Some of the responsibility falls
on the voter to get to the right precinct, we can't do it all.
