Iraq Susceptible to Corruption, Survey Finds (Ya think?)

Iraq, which was ranked among the world's most corrupt nations in a survey released yesterday, is likely to see rampant corruption in its oil industry and reconstruction efforts unless the United States, Britain and other powerful nations take aggressive steps to combat bribery and theft of public money, an international watchdog group warned.

"All the elements for a corrupt brew are in place," said Peter Eigen, chairman of the Berlin-based anticorruption group Transparency International, as it released its 10th annual ranking,

Mr. Eigen, a lawyer who spent 25 years at the World Bank, ticked off the risk factors for Iraq: the oil industry, an element that has encouraged corruption in many countries; the lack of a strong civil society to hold the government accountable; a continuing armed conflict; and a rush to rebuild that could undermine anticorruption policies.

Iraq was only one of many oil producers that the rankings found were plagued by corruption. The others were Angola, Azerbaijan, Chad, Ecuador, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Libya, Nigeria, Russia, Sudan and Yemen. "Our index simply shows practically all oil-rich countries, including Iraq, are doing much worse than countries without oil in terms of corruption," Mr. Eigen said.

8. Greg Palast has something BIG coming out soon.....

I saw him on c-span's WJ this past week. He mentioned, when asked about Iraq, that he got his hands on some explosive information regarding "dividing up Iraq's Oil assests" from LONG BEFORE THE WAR. He said the documents were from very early in 2001! Could they be dick's secret energy papers???? I can't wait to hear more and I hope it is soon!
